Sometimes you can't prevent it. I have a long haired cat who is 15 years old. She always had a beautiful coat and never ever had one knot. I brushed her on a daily basis but even so about three years ago she started getting clumps. I was told it had to do with the humidity in the air. I can't tell you if that is correct but I can tell you that we had a new humidifier installed so the timing certainly is right.
