Not sure where you live but there are a few places you can buy a Labrador.

1) Reputable breeder: your safest, smartest option is from a reputable breeder. Labradors are very prone to hereditary diseases like elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia and PRA (eye disease). A reputable breeders screens all their dogs of hereditary diseases to produce healthy, sound, good temperament puppies. It may cost a lot more than any other choice but if you want a better chance at a healthy dog, it's the best choice. A Labrador from a reputable breeder will cost around $750 - $1200 (AUD)+.
2) Pet Shop: never, ever, EVER buy a puppy from a pet store. They come from PUPPY MILLS that breed hundreds of dogs every heat. They produce un-healthy, expensive puppies without any care about the pups. Often they are sick and carry a hereditary illness. A Labrador puppy in a pet shop will cost between $900 - $1400.
3) Animal Shelter: another great choice. Although you may not find a puppy there, they still have amazing dogs up for adoption. People bring in their dogs when they can no long care for them. Most are generally healthy although you do not know where the person got the dog from. They may have bought it from a pet shop, reputable breeder etc. You do not know if they screened their dog and you don't know what the temperament of the sire and dam are/were. It would be an amazing feeling to know that you SAVED A LIFE of a homeless dog. The price of a dog at a shelter would cost $50-$180 for adults and $130-$250 for puppies.
4) Backyard Breeder: these are like mini-at-home puppy mills. They breed their dogs with no care about how they do it. It's all for MONEY. They usually have pet quality, sick, un-healthy, old dogs without screening her of hereditary diseases. This is also a very bad choice. A Labrador from a BYB (backyard breeder) would cost $200-$800.
5) Labrador Rescue: a good choice. They are Labs that have been left there or found. Some are not purebred but why does the fact that they are purebred even matter? They are usually older (2-8 years old) and some have been sick (but are now OK or on on-going medication). There are some really fantastic dogs at the rescue shelters. It can be hard to find puppies at a Labrador rescue as very few are sick, or need an urgent home. An adult from the rescue would be $160-$250 and a puppy between $250-$500.
