Given how central religion has been to human culture, isn't it a bit implausible that it will disappear, or even just decline so far that it becomes irrelevant?

It will never disappear. It's unfortunate, but it's true.

Religion is just one branch of ideology, like Buddhism, Capitalism, celebrity culture or football mania. It is ideology that has been central to humanity, and that can't change. But as priorities shift it is conceivable that religious versions of ideology will become less relevant for more people - as has happened over the last 200 years. It is NOT realistic to think that religion will disappear - but it is reasonable to imagine its decline from significance, among large swathes of the world's population.

I shoudl say, though, that with Christian fundamentalists in America, and the Islamo-fascists rising up all over the place, I'm not holding my breath.

...Humans are creatures of worship - they will worship God, or sports, or themselves. Worship will not disappear; the true Gospel (i.e., 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and raised on the third day) can become clouded, deluded, and even overrun by unbiblical traditions and false Gospels.
...I think true Gospel is less relevant in certain countries, and now other Gospels and/or religious systems are starting to take over (like in France and England). In a couple of generations, Islam will take over France, since the average French woman has 5 abortions in her life - this will cause the French population to decline, and Muslims are having large families, so they will have France before long.
