Antibiotics won't cure a viral infection; it will only make him more resistant to antibiotics, and they will be less effective if he needs them later in life. Doctors are finally moving away from over prescribing antibiotics; there are a lot of antibiotic resistant infections that are making life very difficult for some people, and it's directly linked to the over prescribing of unneeded antibiotics.

However, if he's not getting better, you need to take him back to be reevaluated. Sometimes doctors do misdiagnose, and it's better to be safe than sorry. Get him rechecked, and make sure his illness isn't getting too severe.

Hope this helps!

Poor little rugrat...your best bet is to do what the doctors tell you.

A humidifier will help...think about how good you feel after getting out of a hot shower when you have a cold!

Go to the store and get these three things: Cepacol, Pedialyte, and Pediasure. The Cepacol will help shorten the duration of the illness, the Pedialyte will help restore all the fluids he's losing from being sick and keep him from dehydrating, and Pediasure will help to replace the nutrients he's losing by not eating. Make sure the pedialyte and pediasure are refrigerated, the coldness might help him with any sore throat issues he's got that could be preventing him from swallowing real foods.

Such symptoms are common for a viral infection. Don´t worry too much about it, since any viral infection takes a reasonable time to get over. Just watch him to drink enough water (even though if it´s flavorless than any known soda!), and make him/her to have some meal too. Perhaps, you still may get help at any pharmacy in town. Some patience from you will also help tremendously.

Not sure where you live but there's a product called Hydra-Sense which is a nasal vapourizer derived from sea water. There's a different size vapourizer depending on the age but it can be used from infancy. It really helps clear up a runny nose. As for the cough, try Triaminic Nighttime, it works wonders.

Lots of fluids, rest, and a some children's robitussin. Prop head up by raising upper end of mattress with a catalog or thick book. Vaporizer with some eucalyptus oil might help. If not better within 48 hours, call doctor.

I'm not a doctor.
I've been a sick kid before though.

Vaporizer/humidifier, good idea.
Loss of appetite. Might not be able to do anything for a day or so.

Fluids, if possible. Even if they don't stay down.

Monitor body temperature.

I believe you have reason to submit a child to ER if they have serious rises in temperateure (or life threatening symptoms) over an "extended period."

New laws are coming into effect:

Maybe you should just talk to the Chemist??? I have tried all the over the counter stuff too and none of them seem to work. When my kids are sick I always rub Vicks in their chest and that's about it, unless their phlegm is green, then go to Dr and get antibiotics I think that over the counter stuff is only good for making them sleepy when they are sick.

cant eat much and cough, go get some baby cough syrup to help relieve the symptoms, and use the vaporizer, offer the child juice and anything you think he would like, pudding, ice cream just to get some food in him. warm baths should help a little bit too.
