Charlotte, NC has a lot of the shops and amenities that you might find in Atlanta. The airport is very convenient, too. The traffic is starting to get yucky at rush hour, but it's not as bad as Atlanta traffic just yet. Just crappy if there are accidents (backs up fast).
I lived in the Triangle area of NC for 5 years (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill). Also a very nice area. Traffic is not as bad as Charlotte or Atlanta, although it can get heavy at times (but at least it's moving). Very progressive from all the universities in the area (Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State), which help bring in people from all over the country. Several new upscale malls in the area, and everything is convenient to get to. Also a lot of parks nearby which are great for hiking and don't take hours to get to. The airport is easy to get to between Durham and Raleigh, and surprisingly I was able to get a lot of direct flights out of there.

Charlotte and Macon come immediately to mind. Nashville and Birmingham are also valid choices.
Charlotte and Nashville are each about a 4-hour drive from Atlanta. Birmingham and Macon are each in the 2-hour range.

I have found many cities in North Carolina to have the qualities of Atlanta while being a bit smaller and less congested. Charlotte & Raleigh would be at the top of my list.
