yeah do they get the pills on a prescription basis or from a street pharmaceuticals dealer. if it's from that latter that could be an indication of an addiction.

First, the amount of pills being taken and the frequency. If its more than 6 to 8 a day, it's a problem. Plus the amount of acetaminophen (Tylenol) in the tablets could be harmful to the liver.

Secondly, what happens when they stop taking them? If they become nauseated, shaky, sweaty, etc., it's a sign of physical withdrawal and a clear indicator of probably being addicted.

Lastly, if they are doctor shopping, forging Rx or buying them off the Internet or on the streets, its a clear sign of addiction.

Withdrawal from opioids such as hydrocodone is discomforting, but it's not life threatening. After 48-72 hours the symptoms will disappear.

"Many persons taking vicodin longer than medically necessary keep using it thinking that if they were to stop taking vicodin, their pain would return. In reality, the fear of vicodin withdrawal can be a strong motivating factor in the continuing use of vicodin, and more importantly, the feeling that more vicodin is needed to combat the same pain. Over a period of time more and more vicodin is needed to have the same pain relieving effects and to ward off vicodin withdrawal symptoms. Many people end up taking more and more vicodin or changing medications and switching to a strong medication such as oxycontin or loritab and taking more and more of these, due to the highly addictive qualities of these medications. They take NOT according to a doctor's prescription.

Even with a script, it is easily abused.
When someone continues to use in the face of negative consequences, the question becomes: just how important is it?

For an addict, or "someone being addicted" it turns out to be the top priority.

For those with severe medical problems, pain that never goes away, and where it is medically necessary, the question is a hard one.

Only the individual themselves can judge if they are an "addict" or not.

What is an "addict" anyway?:

"Addiction is a mental or physical disorder proposed to be precipitated by a combination of genetic, biological/pharmacological and social factors. Addiction is characterized by the repeated use of substances or behaviors despite clear evidence of morbidity secondary to such use."

well...it is a lot harder to be one than to describe one....

increased tollerance, vicoden has hydrocodone in it which is a schedule IV narcotic. the symptoms are the same as for any other mood altering drug, including alcohol. will he lie, cheat, and steal to get it yet? if he hasen't got there yet he will if he doesn't get help. that is of course assuming he is abusing the drug as you imply. however if one is taking the drug as prescribed by a doctor, one can still become addicted to it. mentally and physically addicted. physical addiction is the more dangerous as the body gets to where it can't function normally without it and the person must have it. that's what causes the lying, cheating, and stealing to get it. he needs help because if he is physically addicted and he were to stop cold turkey or not be able to get any for a period of time, he could have serious withdrawal symptoms.
