Buy her the book "Allen Carr's easy way to stop smoking". I stopped a week ago after reading it, and it makes stopping really easy. You say your wife has tried "everything"? Let her read the book and stopping smoking will seem a lot easier. It explains how as a smoker you are a drug addict, and how smoking one cigarette makes you want to smoke the next one.
I think replacing one drug (nicotine) with another (zyban) is a very drastic step, and if she can stop without it and never want to smoke again it is worth trying methods that doesn't involve other drugs.
Look up Allen Carr on the Internet and find more information (I have only stopped for a week, so I guess my testimony might not be that convincing yet....But I feel really different to other times I have quit using nicotine chewing gum. This time I actually don't want to smoke anymore, and it was a pleasant experience to quit. I used to smoke 20-25 a day.)

I should add my uncle stopped using zyban 2 years ago (he used to smoke 60 a day). My aunt says he is very irritable - but at least he is not smoking. But using Allen Carr´s method I don't feel irritable at all (my husband agree!)

Good luck to your wife.

I gave up smoking 12 weeks ago. I used Zyban as I am allergic to the patches & can,t chew gum.
Zyban was actually meant as an antidepressant but those using it for this found they stopped smoking without realising it. Zyban affects people differently. For the 1st three days you take 1 tab then you take 2. I found 2 gave me a cloudy feeling in the head so I went back to 1and I had stopped smoking within 3 days. The smell of smoke now makes me feel ill & at times I say things which only a reformed smoker would say. I also suffered with constipation. My husband tried Zyban. He had the same side affects as me but also got body aches, but that could be because he had just come out of hospital after being in a coma. He stopped taking the Zyban but will give it another go in 12 months which is the waiting period before you are allowed to try them again. Your doctor can give you more info. Good luck!

heya bud. everyone has good answers but u asked about zyban.
Ive tried to quit before... and couldn't i used zyban. its amazing!
you take a tablet once a day and continue smoking... well after i think 10 days u are supposed to pick a quit day, each day smoking 1 less cigg... When i was taking the zyban, about the 6th day i couldnt even have 1 cigg, it was just disgusting to me.
You are supposed to pretty much contnue as usual, and go about ur day like normal.

The taste was more acute and no more urge at all.

I highly recommend it. Here are the catches... 1. its not cheap 2. about 26 days into the 3 month cycle i got nauseous ( so bad i stopped after 1 cycle )

while i was taking it, i couldnt smoke a cigg, if i did..it was horrible tasting and disgusted me extremely. However after 2 months of quiting, i was at a party and slowly started smokin again.
I recommend zyban but u gotta do the entire 3 cycles to keep and kick it for good.

Good luck to your wife!

Don't bother with Zyban. That is just an antidepressant called Wellbutrin with a different name tagged on. That will only get her addicted to another mind-altering substance. Also, nicotine replacement (patches, gum. lozenges) is useless because it merely shifts people from getting nicotine though smoking to getting it another way, which can cause people to get addicted to the replacement products and spend all day chewing nicorette, which eventually just send them back to smoking because it is more enjoyable. Also, those products can cause serious side effects if used too frequently so be wary. The most effective way to quit is really to just STOP because the longer you drag out the process of quitting, the more likely you are to want to get rid of the slow withdrawal and go back to smoking. Cold turkey quitting works much faster. It is uncomfortable and takes willpower and commitment, and because of this your wife may relapse and quit again many times over and over, but it's ok. because eventually when she really ready she will reached the point where she can get through it. And the truth is, nicotine leaves your body within 24 hours of your last smoke so although the withdrawal process not pleasant, it won't kill you and it is also really quite short so once you get through it, that's it!! I wish you both good luck!

I smoked for almost 8 years... i am now (just about) 27 years old and got sick of it. About 8 1/2 months ago I decided it was time. I tried cold turkey but you know that just doesn't work! Then I tried Nicotine Polarcrilex Gum. There are 2 different mg of nicotine ... 4mg or 2mg... I am using the 2mg. It has helped a lot! But the problem i am now facing is getting off the gum. My Doctor said you can not truly call yourself a non-smoker till you have not smoked for 100 days. And nothing is a habit until you have done it for 3 months straight. So tell your wife not to give up... if one thing doesn't work for her... there are other doors! Not everyone responds to one way of help as others.
G/L! :-)

Giving up smoking is extremely hard. I have been or I should say HAD been a smoker for almost 30 years. About 2 months back I had a minor heart attack and talk about a wake up call.

I spoke to my doctor about giving up smoking and he suggested a number of ways. I started on Nicabate CQ. They come in 21mg which is recommended to apply patch for 6 weeks. You then drop to 14 mg for 2 weeks and 7mg for 2 weeks.

The patches are 24 hours patches, but I found I didn't need mine through the night while I was sleeping. So far, I have been doing ok with them, but I will admit I've had the odd smoke here and there, but no more than 3 a day. Considering I was almost 35 a day, that's a big improvement.

The only hass I've found with these patches is that in hot weather I have had trouble getting them to stick, but other than that they are great.

A lot of giving up smoking is will power and the smoker needs to WANT to give up smoking, not for someone else to want them to stop.

I wish your wife all the best in her endeavour and tell her that if she has a smoke, not to berate herself. If she falls off the wagon, step right back up there again and keep going.

I Found This Cute Excerpt Read it ..Maybe it Helps.

"While it took me a total of seven attempts to finally quit smoking for life, one of the best advices I received was from a person in Indianapolis, Indiana; He suggested, promise yourself that youÆll never go back to smoking on the spare of the moment, on an instant of weakness, tell yourself: Ok, I give up I will start smoking tomorrow morning! Today, 20 years later I use this technique in other aspects of my effort to be a better person."

Ok comical answer:
cut her hands off. no hands she can't put a cigarette in her mouth.

More realistic answer:
There are a myriad of techniques it's just a matter of finding the one that works best for her. Some people have cured their addiction with hypnosis, stress relief classes, various drugs, and money deprivation. (i.e making sure the person does not have enough money available to them to buy cigarettes)
Don't give up.
