you realised that you meant psychologist

A psychiatrist trains first in medicine and qualifies as a doctor, then goes on to do additional training in psychiatry and will be able to do things like prescribe medication and anything else you might expect a doctor to do

A psychologist usually does a degree in psychology then goes on to do additional training to become either a clinical psychologist or counselling psychologist or other types. Generally their focus might be on various psychological therapies but they might also do things like psychometric testing.

There will be some overlap but that is the general difference

A psychiatrist is a medical dr. They do their medical training then speicalise in psychiatry - mental illness. They are able to precribe medication and can be found working in hospitals and/or community settings; also in private practice.

A psychologist will have generally done a degree in psychology then done further training (Phd) in one kind of speciality such as counselling, educational, occupational therapy. They are doctors in name due to having recieved a Phd but are not medical drs like psychiatrists. They work with all sorts of people, in hospitals, community settings, GP surgeries, private practice, schools, prisons etc.

As other people have said, a psychiatrist is a medic but a psychologist isn't, and the details about training are correct as well. The type of psychologist who treats people with mental illnesses in something like a hospital is a clinical psychologist.

In terms of their patients and practice, a psychiatrist deals with people who have mental illnesses caused mainly by chemical imbalances (like schizophrenics, for example). They may give a bit of psychological therapy, but they focus more on medical treatments: drugs and ECT etc.

Clinical psychologists deal with people whose mental illnesses are caused mainly by psychological factors (like anxiety). They treat patients with methods like cognitive-behavioural therapy (working out and changing negative thought patterns etc., trying to work out what happens in your subconscious to cause it).

There is an overlap. People who suffer from depression can go to either, because just as many cases of depression are caused mainly by psychological factors as are caused mainly by chemical imbalances.

I think you mean the difference between and psychologist and a psychiatrist. A psychologist with basically sane people who have some issues they need to work through, anything from mother issues to mild depression. A psychiatrist deals with people who are not sane such as schitzophernics.

A physiologist knows what he's doing.

A psychiatrist doesn't -- and they admit it:

A psychologist doesn't really know what he's doing either, but they don't pretend they do (so much), and won't pump you full of dangerous drugs on the pretense that they do.
