There are a couple of different ways this can be done. One of them is to get a Windows XP upgrade CD, which when run will upgrade you. The other option, which is useful if the upgrade CD is non-existant to you, is to buy windows xp from anywhere that sells it (personally I recommend pro because it has fewer issues). Since you have things backed up do a reformat of your hard drive and then Install Windows XP off of the CD(s).

That makes no sense at all! Windows 2000, the flagship of XP by the way, didnt have that much software in it as XP does! Your wanting to get rid of things you dont need but you are going to go to a system that has ten tons more software! That makes about as much sense as teats on a boar! Right off the top, windows 2000 is far faster than XP in the first place! I have XP and windows 2k both and I have reverted to win 2k on all of my systems but one due to this reason! If all you are wanting to do is rid yourslef of software it would make more sense to remove programs on your current system! I am not saying not to do this but you aint gainin a thing! If you choose to go to windows xp, by the xp upgrade and follow the directions, its pretty simple! Windows 2000 is also alot more stable! Its in my opinion, the best operating system Microsoft ever came out with!

Yes, but you will have to purchase Windows XP Home or XP Pro.
This is the easy but not cheap part.
Then the hard drive will need to be formatted and reloaded with the new OS. then the system will need to be validated by Microsoft.
As I don't know how competent you are, you may have to pay some one to do a reload for you!
I think Maplin will carry out this work.
Avoid PC World(known as "Fleece Me World") at all costs, when you are set up with your new OS, install AVG anti virus and anti spy-ware, before going onto the WWW.
Don't install Norton at all costs, it embeds itself all over the hard drive, is practically impossible to remove, and you will have to keep ,paying a subscription fee.
AVG is superb and it's free, and it will find viruses that Norton has not even heard of!
Finally, remember that you may need new drivers for printers etc, as XP will not work with older drivers designed for earlier Operating Systems.
Have fun

Installing XP is very very easy. Just like Win 2000 you boot from the CD and the process begins. XP has a few small differences in installing it but nothing major or difficult.
No you don't need a professional to do it, and they overcharge you for this easy task anyhow. I've been fixing computers now for about 7 years, if you need help add me to yahoo msngr: misterb_1972@hotmail.com or go to http://www.petri.co.il/install_windows_xp_pro.htm

You must buy the Windows XP install CD, which is pretty steep. But once you have it, you plunk the CD into the CD-ROM drive and follow all of the instructions.

Do this:
Locate your Motherboard CD, If you cannot find it, open your computer case and see if you can find any ID marks that identify your motherboard. On the Internet, motherboard WEB page, download all utilities and drivers for YOUR motherboard! BE SURE AND USE THE CORRECT MODEL NUMBER!
Disconnect system from Internet.
In MS WORD create a document, type Save me in the document.
To save the document, use SAVE AS, and give it then name
"SAVE AND FIND ME" After saving the doc, exit and go to the SEARCH function, SEARCH for "SAVE AND FIND ME.doc
Write down the location of that doc. Go to My Computer, then
the C: drive, Continue going to the different folders until you come to the folder My Documents. In that folder should be most of your data. Copy it to a CD.
Put your WINDOWS XP disk in your CD Drive, reboot your system, press F2 or DELETE to boot into the BIOS.
IN the BIOS, find the BOOT ORDER tab. Set FIRST BOOT
to Boot From CD, 2nd BOOT = Hard drive. EXIT and SAVE.
Continue XP installation. READ THE SCREEN CAREFULLY,
read slowly. Select.NEW INSTALLATION, delete ALL partitions,
create 2 partitions, one = 20GB. Select 20GB partition, format NTFS, complete XP installation. Go into BIOS and change BOOT ORDER to First BOOT device = Hard drive, 2nd BOOT device = CD
Install motherboard drivers/utilities, DO not install any WIN 2000
software or drivers. Install Anti Virus and Firewall.
Connect to Internet, go to www.microsoft.com, UPDATE and let this site update your system, then go to the WEB site for printer and download XP drivers for your printer, do the same for Graphic and audo cards.
