Try Samran Place. It is in Siam area, with breakfast and with good rates. You can also consider First House in Pratunam area, Diamond City or budget areas in Khao San ( most have to walk in to book ).

Check out www.asiarooms.com, they have about the best room rates that I have been able to find. Make sure you read the reviews of each hotel. It will give an idea of what to expect good or bad, hopefully good. I would make sure the hotel is close to a BTS skytrain station or a MRT subway station in order to avoid taking a taxi as much as possible. I have stayed at the more expensive hotels in Bangkok. I have heard that the Nana Hotel is good at USD 33 per night and the reviews back that up. There are hotels in the Chinatown/Khao San Road area that are half the price. But, I don't like to have to take a bus or taxi just to get out of the area. I usually stay at the Emerald Hotel but, their rates have gone up 20 percent because of the value of the dollar. I have stayed at the Amari Atrium Hotel, which I don't suggest for the price and location, the Plaza Athenee's Hotel, which is extremely nice and expensive, the Grand Mercure Fortune Hotel which is okay and a little expensive and somewhat convenient, it is near a MRT subway station.
Good luck

try baiyoke suite... ard USD34 per nite.
it's at the centre of the very near the wholesale market and a weekend market is at it's door step. old but good
Don't know why most prefer the BTS (or subway) to taxi. I personnally would avoid the trains if you're on a shopping trip (which isn't much cheaper). And imagine lugging the bags and plastic bagsss and cramping onto the trains with so many people, especially during peak hour. Besides, cabs are abundant and the fare is very cheap in bangkok, costing no more than usd 2-3 per trip to most places within the city including a trip to Jatuchak weekend day market (a MUST visit for great bargains) or Lumpini night market (great hangout with a open air lounge and live band, and plenty of shops selling handicraft).
Tip 1: Do your homework on the places you want to visit, and get the hotel staff to write the names of the destination for you before you start each trip. You can ask them to gauge the estimated fare for your ref.
Tip 2: Make sure the cab runs on meter, otherwise, negotiate for a reasonable price or get out and find another one (you'll be pleasantly surprise at the no. of cabs in bangkok).
Tip 3: Avoid the tuk-tuk (3 wheeler open-air cab that took james bond for a spin) at all cost.

Hi, I have 2 websites for you to browse. First is www.asiarooms.com for a look at the hotels available and their rates. There are reviews and rates and you can book online, some with further discount. Majority of them do include breakfast. You can check the location to see if you like it.
I will recommend you look for one that is close to the Skytrain line or the underground MRTA. These rail lines offer convenient travel in the city and avoid the surface jams.
Next is www.tourismthailand.org to look at the places of interest that interest you. You can note them down and when in Bangkok, have a travel desk arrange the tours for you. Cost is about 300Bahts to 1500bahts depending on the duration and distance and whether meal included. So you do have choices.
You can email me at thaitourinfo@yahoo.com for more ideas if you like. I can assist you deoending on what you would like to do while in Bangkok, even if you want to venture out of Bangkok too!
Happy holiday.

Without a doubt your looking for the Malaysia Hotel. Great location near Lumpini Park, safe, 24 hour restraunt and front desk and security. Nice pool, friendly staff and it's only about $12-14 US dollars--includes breakfast usually.I've stayed there many times and would now if I didn't have a condo. Numerous friends stay there now every time they visit Bangkok. A great city and country with much to do for very little money. Have a great trip.

So the best place to start is the Khaosan Road, bars, restaurants, shops, banks, travel agents, everything. You can get a taxi there easily from the airport (go to the official taxi booth at the exit) stay at the Buddy Lodge http://www.buddylodge.com/ it's clean, safe, is reasonably cheap and you can get to anywhere from it. I stayed there before and am going back in February 2007.
