what is the significance of having to take ones shoes off when entering the dining hall-I understand why in the Temple, but why in the dining hall?

Taking ones shoes off is a sign of respect. Even when eating, it is about offerings to Krishna. I imagine it helps keep the floors clean too since so many traipse through. As for control in the upper echelon, I don't know in regards to the particular group, but that can certainly happen because people are what they are-which is not gods. My experience of anything is take what works for you and leave the rest behind....
