If the dog really cannot retract his penis (meaning that the end goes back in all the way when he stands up), he needs a vet's attention immediately, and the advice given about lubrication should be followed.

However, many male dogs will have the tip of the penis protruding from the sheath when they are in the sitting position, but when they stand up it should go totally back into the sheath. The tip of a male dogs penis often protrudes when the dog is defecating too.

If the penis does retract when he stands up, and he is licking all the time then have the vet check him, he may have an irritation, infection, or foreign body problem.

You don't state the age of the puppy but it would be very rare for a young pup to get their penis all the way out (often referred to as an "outside tie") where the bulb part is out and swelled (the usual situation when a dog's penis is out and won't retract. The few cases of this that I've heard of in pups were cases where the situation had some "human help" to make them happen in the first place.

Sometimes a male pup that is handraised or separated from his mother when very young (under 6 weeks of age usually), he will try to suck on the tip of his penis due to nursing instinct. Pups handraised or separated very young will sometimes such on the penis of another male pup, due to the nursing instinct and the fact that the penis of a very young male pup is about the size of the mother's teat.

In the case where the tip just won't go back in because of the rolled foreskin, sliding the sheath forward toward the tip to where the sheath covers the tip usually will correct the situation. This minor problem is common in stud dogs right after being used for breeding, right after they separate from a tie, and a stud should always be checked after a mating is finished, to make sure his penis has gone all the way back into the sheath.

Basic Training of the Puppy - Read here https://tr.im/7q5sH

The new puppy is certainly one of the most adorable and cuddly creatures that has ever been created. It is the most natural thing in the world to shower it with love and affection. However, at the same time it is important to realize that if you want to have a well trained adult dog, you need to begin the training process right away. The dog, like its related ancestor, the wolf, is a pack animal. One of the features of a pack is that it has a single dominant leader. Your new puppy is going to want that leader to be you, but if you do not assume that role from the very beginning, the puppy’s instincts will push him to become the leader.

The most important thing to remember about training the puppy during its first six months of life is that it must see you as the leader of the family pack. The essential thing is gaining the trust and the respect of the puppy from the beginning. You will not do this by allowing the puppy to do whatever it wants to do whenever it wants to do it. On the other hand, a certain amount of patience is required. Most people err in their early training by going to extremes one way or the other. Although you need to begin the basic training process at once, you can not expect your dog to do too much at first. Basic obedience training is fine and should include simple commands like sit, stay, and come. Remember that trying to teach the dog advanced obedience techniques when it is a puppy is much like trying to teach a five year old child algebra.

It is also important to restrain from cruel or abusive treatment of the puppy. You can not beat obedience into your dog, and it certainly is not going to engender feeling of respect and trust. House breaking is an area where this usually becomes a problem because of the anger that is triggered when the puppy fails and creates a mess inside the home. Although this issue must be addressed without anger, it most be addressed. If you allow the puppy to eliminate inside the house, it will continue to do so as an adult dog. The same thing is true of other destructive or dangerous behavior such as chewing and biting. Do not expect the puppy to grow out of it. You are going to need to train the puppy out of it, but you should do so firmly but with a sense of play and fun using positive reinforcement and lots of love and praise for good behavior.

This does happen and can be quite a problem as the penis drys out and can become very painful. It's caused when the foreskin rolls inward preventing the penis retracting. You need to help because it will be very irritating and can be a problem should the penis be allowed to dry out. A small amount of mineral oil or Vaseline will suffice. Apply it to his penis then roll the skin outward and GENTLY press the penis backward. It may take a few moments but you should be able to fix it. Some dogs have a chronic problem with this requiring a minor surgery where they actually cut the sheath in a way that prevents it happening in the future. Hopefully your boy won't need this.

Schedule a vet appointment for TODAY! This condition is generally caused by an infection. The swelling prevents the penis from retracting.

PROBLEM SOLUTION : I have a 3 yo, Dachshund and this unfortunately happened to him, I called the Vet and she told me make a sugar and water paste to spread on it, Often this will help. Being it did not in our case, I called her back and she then instructed me to apply a non fragrant sensitive skin lube to it and try getting the skin to go back over the extended penis. I used Astroglide Sensitive skin solution, and attempted to gently pull the the skin back over the protruding penis. After a few uncomfortable attempts (for both him and I) it worked and so far he has been fine with no harm done. I hope this helps anyone who has this problem happen to their pup. Apparently this is a very common problem for male dogs who are not fixed. Well, I am sorry to say Mickey, I think its time to put the Cone of Shame on. Its for the better.

you need to get it to a vet right away. If it cannot retract it will swell first then the skin gets tight around it and it dries out causing it to become very very painful and die off. Don't wait, vet ASAP!! Then get to the cause of why it happened. Get him neutered if not already done.

I know this sounds gross but you need to get some lubricant onto the at penis ASAP and try and help him retract it. If you can't u MUST go to vet as they get very swollen and dried out and then can't go back and this is serious

Take him to the vet. Dog's penis's CAN get swollen and stuck out. Too swollen for them to get them back in. My co-worker at the clinic where i work has a chihuahua who licks his penis until it is swollen and red, and can't go back in. The vet had to put it back in, and bandage his belly so he wouldn't do it again. I think it is best for your veterinarian to handle this.
