How do I sing louder without going off key?

Also, keep in mind that not everyone has a belt voice. Some people have a big voice that hits all the glory notes (think Kelly Clarkson, Martina McBride), and some people have a richer, less bold tone (think Nora Jones, Anna Nalick).

That said, there is nothing wrong with working on your belt and learning to use it. Pretty much anyone can belt to SOME degree. But if it doesn't come naturally to you, look at the strengths you have and learn to showcase those to your best advantage. Every voice has strengths-and sometimes, the big voices are a dime a dozen. Everyone seems to think that to be "good" or "amazing", they have to be able to belt a huge note for 5 minutes. Not true. It's AWESOME if it's what you do well, but if not, it's not a stretch to wow with what YOU have.

Anyway, to strengthen your belt, good breathing technique and control are essential. And learning not to rely on your throat so much. People abuse their throats trying to do things they simply are not designed to do, and it's MUCH better to have a solid technique. I recommend finding a good vocal coach.

Good luck!

Singing Louder is the wrong approach. It's not about singing louder. It's about projecting the voice properly. If you are singing properly it doesn't matter if you sing a note pianissimo or Fortissimo you will be heard in every corner of the theatre. You must maintain the Appoggio (support) and sing on the breath. You must maintain an open throat which is keeping your larnyx down and your soft palate high and sing into your mask.

If you want to truly learn how to sing properly, I suggest you find a qualified voice teacher. The best place to find one is through the National Association of Teachers of Singing. The website is www.nats.org.

When you sing louder and go off key, its probably because you are trying to breath up in your chest and push with your vocal chords to get louder. This will just end up sounding bad and hurting your voice. The best way to sing loudly and support your tone is to breath from the diaphragm. You can figure out how to do that by laying on your back and breathing naturally. Your lower torso should expand, not your ribcage. YOu should breath that way when you are singing, that kind of breath support will make you much louder. You should also try to keep your neck and throat relaxed when you sing so you don't strain your vocal chords. Let your breath do all the work, the sound comes from the air blowing against your vocal chords, NOT from you physically moving the chords yourself. Singing is just sustained speech, so sing like you are talking only longer and with notes =] Hope this makes sense and is helpful!

Pavaroti /Mario Lanza styles? 5 steps but just give you 1 for lack of time.
Practice inverted breathing 10 min. a day. That will be the technique you will release lines of your song. Unnotice, fill your abdomen/stomach with air. Use this to lift one line of song from beginning to end of a line. repeat technique for every line. Air from abdomen must be lifting word by word in one line. You wont get off key. If only I could be near you.

Always spend 15 mins warming up, going through all vowel sounds and Diaphragm exercises. Second, concentrate (I mean really concentrate) on using you Diaphragm for power while keeping your throat open. With time, you'll be officially "belting".
