I would be cautious if I were you. Even if it is true that his ex friend said that he never bothered even talking to you about it. A normal person would have asked you about it. So something isn't right with this guy.

You should move on. It sounds more like he had a girlfriend for 5 months and they ended it so, now he wants to start talking to you again but, he's not over his ex yet. Of course that's just me reading between the lines. If his friend really said that to him about you, don't you think he would have come to you and asked you why before actually listening to his friend.

I would try to restore you guys relationship but tell this dude from now on if he hear anything about you from a best friend or anyone to bring it to you first he just cost you 5 months of happiness and now you have to get the chemistry back. Tell him to forget this hanging out crap either we will be together or screw it he already wasted enough time!

This doesn't look good to me. To believe his friend without so much as a word to you - well that troubles me. And his lukewarm response to you now spells trouble. You can do better. This guy has problems. Tell him you want to be friends but not as close as before. Then get real busy. Phase him out.

Take it slow and be sure to communicate. It would have been nice had he asked you if the rumor was true. Sounds like an excuse to me. If he had a change of mind......communicate.

you should confront this "best frined"
better yet, he should
do it together
play it by ear from that point
his credibility could be at stake
