My friends dog had puppies and I adopted 2 of them, they are 9 weeks old, she didn't deworm them or gave them vaccinations, I just found out that puppies were supposed to be dewormed at different ages, is it too late to do that? also what else do I need to do other than deworming and vaccinations? also can I do this myself or do I have to bring them to the vet?

Deworm A Puppy

Pups and adult dogs should be dewormed regularly throughout their lives, as well as given monthly heartworm preventative. You can get a combination dewormer/heartworm preventative from the vet to give to your dog once a month that will protect him from heartworms and also deworm him for roundworm, hookworm, and whipworm.

The only really effective wormers are those that are available from the vet, although if the vet will give you a prescription, you then can order those products at a cheaper price through pet company catalogs, such as K-Vet Supply or Foster&Smith.

Regular wormers do not affect tapeworm however, tapeworm eggs are carried by fleas and a dog gets tapes when a flea is swallowed and the tapeworm eggs then hatch out in the dogs intestines. There is also a tapeworm a dog can acquire by eating a rodent or rabbit that has tapeworm. The only effective wormer for tapeworm has to be gotten from the vet.

Giardia is another parasite that often causes problems in young pups, old dogs, and stressed or sick dogs. It can cause diarrhea and loss of appetite and condition. Giardia cannot be found in the usual stool sample and often if giardia is suspected, a dog is treated for giardia because giardia is very hard to see even when the protocol for looking for giardia is followed exactly. If a dog has giardia, its usually obvious from the big improvement in symptoms within 24-48 hours after treatment is started.

Its also never too late to vaccinate. You can buy vaccine for everything usually given, except rabies, and give them yourself but in most states, by law rabies vaccine has to be given by the veterinarian. The sooner you get the dog vaccinated, the better. Even if your pup isn't around other dogs, wildlife carry distemper and parvovirii too, and insects, birds, and other such creatures spread these virii.

You need to take your puppy to the vet. And it is NEVER too late to deworm a dog or a puppy. Your veterinarian will tell you everything you need to do to take care of a puppy.

Don't use petmeds. Go to your vet. This person said they are STILL deworming a puppy at 9 months old for tape worms. If he would have gone to the vet in the first place, he wouldn't have to deworm him so much...And the vet would have educated then that tape worms come from eating fleas and rodents. So if he still has fleas or is eating rodents, then he is just reinfecting himself.

There are deworming products you can use over the counter, however it's best to take your new buds to the vet for a good check up now. That way you have a good idea of what his phisical needs are. Then you can get the good advice that you're seeking. These guys are a part of your family now. And you wouldn't take chances with any human family, right?

any new puppy should be first seen by a vet. the vet will check for heart murmers or any other medical condition you are not trained to hear or see. no the pups are not too old. you need to take them to your vet tomorrow and have their first set of vaccines and get them dewormed. do not buy over the counter dewormers. often they do not cover all the types of intestinal parasites your pup can have. and you're just wasting money you could be spending for a proper vet check. while you're there your vet will tell you of what protocol for vaccines. stick to it. and when old enough schedule to have them spayed or neutered. good luck to you.

Since you are not familiar with basic care of a puppy as far as shots and worming, I'd say definitely go to a Vet and have them write down for you when to bring the puppy back for the next few sets of shots and when to get the rabies shot because they are too young for that now. Also, by law, a rabies shot has to be given by a Vet.
You will need a medication for heartworm prevention soon and as far as the pups worming needs are concerned, it's better to have your pup wormed by Vet. It is not to late! They are just babies.
Ask your Vet about flea prevention products as well.
Some Vets carry booklets on basic puppy care. GL with your pups.

It is never too late to deworm a puppy. You are supposed to keep an eye out on their stool always as worm get nto their system when they eat yucky magot infested meat at any age.....thats why we pooper scoop....so we can make sure nothing is alive in it. The over the counter wormers work great. There are hundreds of dollars of things the vet can charge you for, most of which are not necessary......find a discount clinic that isn't there just to make a buck....one where they will let you make payments or do things slowly...those are the ones that care more about the health of your animals than making their next trip to Maui.....and there are plenty of good inexpensive ones out there....

You can deworm them at any age. I am still deworming mine and he is 9 months old. For some reason he keeps getting tape worms. And you can do it yourself by buying the meds at your vet or on petmeds.com.
