Did I get pregnant, we are a turkey baster baby. And how does that whole artificial insemination thing work, you know with the sperm banks where the man ejaculates into a cup and then hands it to the nurse to freeze. I am assuming that the sperm hit the air.

Why do people insist on saying that sperm die when they hit the air? This is one of the many things wrong with teaching abstinence only.

It's just another illustration of the dire state of sex education in this country. Maddening.

Also maddening is people who don't read questions...

n the proper environment, such as the female reproductive tract beyond the cervix, sperm have a life-span of up to five days. In other environments, such as the vagina, sperm live only a few hours and even less than that outside the human body, exposed to the open air. The egg, on the other hand, has a life-span of only about twenty-four hours from the time it bursts from the ovary. So, fertilization can occur anytime live sperm meet up with a live egg, which can happen even if the sperm are deposited up to five days in advance of ovulation.

Question

How long does sperm live once it's in the open-air?
Answer

How long sperm can live in the open-air depends on the situation, what kind of environment it's in and how much sperm is present. But, on average, sperm can't live for much longer than a few hours in the open-air. It's important to remember that if sperm is inside a women's body, it can survive for up to seven days.

There is a risk of pregnancy if sperm comes into contact with the vagina in any way including from sperm on fingers. If you think that sperm may have come into contact with your vagina within the last five days, and you don't want to get pregnant, you should seek advice on emergency contraception as soon as possible.

What I know is that sperm dies when it gets to a certain degree of temperature. Some say belo 25 degree celcius. Above that, sperm can survive up to 3 days. Thats why there's a possibility of pregnancy even if a sperm hit on the vagina (not inside), because it's still alive and can crawl (if that) in to the womb.
But I don't know how it survived the freezing temperature. Maybe they put hormones or stuff.

Whomever told you was mistaken, they do not die on contact with air. If they did then they would have to go in to extract sperm directly into an airtight container. Obviously air doesn't kill them, because when a donor goes to the sperm bank to make a donation he jacks off into an open cup!

Next time you have a sexual question don't relie on these morons that told you that, please! Try www.talksexwithsue.com she is a registered nurse for like 30 years and she has an awesome call in show on Oxygen. She also has lots of information on just about anything on her website.

LOL Obviously most people aren't very bright to think that...yes, they will die if left out in the air, but it obviously is not an instant death, now is it?? Like you said, how would a sperm bank or IVF work if they did?

Not everyone is as intelligent as you or I. ;)

Well abstinence is good to teach however it is also wise to teach safe sex as well but strongly encourage abstinence. Abstinence is the best way to go, studies have shown that people that stick with one partner only for the rest of their lives have a higher sucess rate in their marriage/relationship. It's called monogomy and that doesn't mea one person at a time it means one person only. Also Condoms don't always pretect against STD's even when used properly. HPV can be passed even with a condom.

its not hitting the air that kills them but drying out, that takes a while not just a moment. the only sure way is birth control pills and a condom
