I feel like I have really bad sinus or allergies when I'm at home. Back when I spent 6 months in New York I felt great! I could breath just fine, but when I got home it started all over again. I'm not so sure what's wrong, if it's my house, because I live in the valley, or because I have dogs! It's really hard to concentrate on anything rite now. I want to move back to New York, but I really can't do that in my life right now. I'll need to save money but this congestion is making it hard to even move. I feel so lazy sometimes and I even get dizzy spells. The worst thing it that I don't have medical insurance.

HelloNurse (Your first answerer) is right- a filter should help a bunch. You might also have a filthy duct system. When we had ours cleaned dog hair, dust and tons of mold came flying out in clumps. It had never been cleaned before we moved here.

Until then, you need to turn down your overactive immune response to whatever the allergen. Flonase, nasonex and nasacort are steroidal nasal sprays my patients' use with good effect. They take a few days to really kick in so you can bridge the gap with claratin or allegra until then. Claratin and Allegra are antihystamines that are not supposed to make you drowsy.

(I'd never have figured in a million years that the air in NY was better than just about anywhere! You just never know)

Hello,
That must be a terrible feeling. I've experienced feeling that I am not able to get enough air in, but with me, it was my nerves.
I would suggest Benadryl for the sinus and allergy problem. And I would also suggest those Breath-ease strips that go over your nose. You won't believe what a difference those little strips do for your breathing. Then work on corrective breathing, by lying on your back, put one hand on your chest, the other hand at the bottom of your belly. Then slowly start taking in air, you have 6 lobes in your lungs, upper, lower and a small one at the bottom, on both sides, so you have to fill all of those with air. You will feel your chest rising with your hand and see it. Then keep taking in air down to your diaphragm. It's below the lungs and also for oxygen supply to the body. You will see and feel with your other hand the area under your rib cage fill up and your belly will rise so high, you won't be able to see your feet. But of course, it's not your belly filling with air, thats your diaphragm filling up. Ideally it's better to take in air through your nose and blowing it out, slowly, out your mouth. Start to be concious of how you are breathing. Do not do this exercise quickly...must be slow and deliberate. Also, rise slowly or you will get dizzy. Your body is not used to getting a full load of oxygen. When you first start, you will feel like you have massively exercised your rib cage muscles and your belly will hurt like a 100 sit ups. It may take you a couple times to be able to get air into all those areas. The ouching will let up soon as you get those muscles used to being used. Another help would be to get one of the small air purifiers... $25-30, maybe less and just take it with you from room to room, wherever you are.
Good Luck!
I hoped this was of some help!
Take care! :)

This has happened to me before. Most likely where you are living the mold count in the air is really high, and having dogs that release dander doesnt help the situation either. I would suggest investing in one of those filtering systems that cleans the air, or a HEPA filtration system. Hopefully that will help.

You may be allergic to certain plants or trees found here, the dogs (were there dogs where you were in NY?), your home (do you have this problem in other people's homes?) pollen from local weeds or flowers, who knows? It would take lengthy testing to determine every little thing you may be allergic to but it can be done. You could try OTC Claritin-D and see if that works for both the histamines and the congestion.

You have given the answer partly.

You must 1. have a bad allergic reaction in your nasal air passages including air sinuses. 2. The allergens (substances causing the allergic reaction) must be present in your home eg.dogs'fur, dust, smoke or furry stuffs like wool or flanel. Carpets and its collected dust is another one.

You have to sort them out yourself and avoid them at all cost.

Listen to your system and you will know it as you have already started.

Good Luck.
