Okay, this is an argument I've heard from atheists quite a lot. It basically means: Although there is no proof that God doesn't exist, there's also no proof that he DOES exist, therefore the DEFAULT belief would be that he DOESN'T because nothing is believed until proven.

Now, that argument works fine with other things BUT...

When it comes to God, we are talking about the creation and origins of the universe. Since the argument can be given that there is very LITTLE chance that the universe "spontaneously existed" after nothingness was goin on for a while...then why is the argument of God so dismissable to most atheists?

TO ALEX AZENDER: Because if God created the universe and the "space time continuum", then he is not SUBJECT to his own creativity laws (i.e. time and space), so he doesn't have a beginning or end. And also, it has been scientifically proven that the universe HASN'T always existed

Well why is it that just because you think that the big bang is wrong that god must be the answer. There is alot more evidence going towards the big bang then god. And you said it has been proven that the universe hasnt always existed haha what a lie. But anyway even if it was proven wouldnt that beg the question how is the big bang more spontaneous then a god deciding to make life.

If a god did create the universe, who created that god? And if the god always existed and didn't need a creator then Why is it so hard for you to accept that the Universe was just always there, and didn't need a god to create it in the first place?

Edit : Too many "ifs" and too many assumptions for any of what you're saying to make sense. It's called begging the question and it's a logical fallacy. You're basing your argument on unproven assumptions and it doesn't work.

Hate to nitpick, but how can you calculate the probability that the Universe spontaneously existed? What makes you assume that probability is low? You would have to have a comparable event with which to make some sort of statistical analysis. Since this Universe is the only one we know about, for all we know, the probability of its existence may be 1 (certainty).

"Since the argument can be given that there is very LITTLE chance that the universe "spontaneously existed" after nothingness was goin on for a while..."

What makes you say that?

if god doesn't exist in time (as you mentioned) then how can he have a thought? how can he speak? how can he move? these things require change and change is measured by time. and i agree with one up there... there is no way that you can know that the probability of the universe spontaneously erupting is low since if that is how we are here, then it did happen, making it (so far as we can tell) a 100% likelihood.

I'm not an atheist, and you hit upon yet anohter hard to - maybe even impossible to prove - issue - the creation of the universe.

So instead I wil ask my question - why are you so wrapped up in what others think about religion when your concerns should be on practicing your religion to the best of your ability?

because there is also the theory that the universe started by another, previous, universe collapsing in on itself so tightly that it exploded. and that makes more sense than 'some mythical man in the sky decided to make it'. At least the scientific theory makes some sense. Your theory basically says it happened because.

Of course you are right and hit the nail on the head. There is even more. We are not dealing with such a made up figure but with testimonies of eywitnesses and reliable men, with prophets and seers, with the faithful and blessed of all generations. There are many reasons to believe in God in fact there are far more and far more serious and intelligent than unbelief. That is why Christians, Jews and Muslims all admired Aristotle, and Plato . Two thinkers among many more that are taught in every college I would say. Unbelief is a matter of the evil will. Unbelief is a bias, not a rational conclusion. The universe does indeed prove a maker God except to the out of control biased man. Evolution is only a substitute for men, somerthing never seen or observed, just believed, because there is no choice, it is either made or slef made as it were.
But evolutionists always start with just enough to get their party going, they never go all the way as faithful believers do to the unfathomable one, because that is an offense to reason, which is blasphemy to them.Reasoning becomes a tyrant a sort of pope in their system that will not let anything be above it, so it just denies and eliminates it with psychological blinders.
Romans chapter 1
For there is a revelation of the wrath of God from heaven against all the wrongdoing and evil thoughts of men who keep down what is true by wrongdoing;
19 Because the knowledge of God may be seen in them, God having made it clear to them.
20 For from the first making of the world, those things of God which the eye is unable to see, that is, his eternal power and existence, are fully made clear, he having given the knowledge of them through the things which he has made, so that men have no reason for wrongdoing:
21 Because, having the knowledge of God, they did not give glory to God as God, and did not give praise, but their minds were full of foolish things, and their hearts, being without sense, were made dark.
22 Seeming to be wise, they were in fact foolish,
23 And by them the glory of the eternal God was changed and made into the image of man who is not eternal, and of birds and beasts and things which go on the earth.
24 For this reason God gave them up to the evil desires of their hearts, working shame in their bodies with one another:
25 Because by them the true word of God was changed into that which is false, and they gave worship and honour to the thing which is made, and not to him who made it, to whom be blessing for ever. So be it.
26 For this reason God gave them up to evil passions, and their women were changing the natural use into one which is unnatural:
27 And in the same way the men gave up the natural use of the woman and were burning in their desire for one another, men doing shame with men, and getting in their bodies the right reward of their evil-doing.

What unbelievers in their simplicity do not get is the difference between make believe and faith. Faith is a operation of the intellect that puts trust into something that is offered to it and does not make up its own teachings. We do not have faith in faith, or faith in anything except what we are persuaded is true and we are persuaded Christ is true and worthy of our loyalty and confidence, they are not.

As to the guy above me who talks about chance , here I post some thought on the subject from a question I posted at another time.

Is chance a causal agency ? Does chance have being? Can it be a cause of anything?
Is it chance that produces the result of a coin toss, or is it weight, velocity, time, and force of gravity? Is there a being named Chance? So that it exerts power? Does chance exert any power at all? If you have a chance meeting, that means it was unplanned not without cause, for although it was unplanned and unexpected, it still happened because it had a cause, only you were not aware of it . The cause was your friend being there and his reason for being there, and you were both there for various reasons or causes. The meeting was caused by these separate independent factors. So if I say I met my friend by chance, what am I really saying? Answer, that I ran into him unexpectedly. So if I say as some are in the habit of saying, the Universe was created by chance, what does that really mean? Am I saying the universe was created by unexpectedly? If Chance is a description then it is descriptive and not a person or a place or a thing. I ask is such a description the cause of anything?

"Very LITTLE chance" is not NO chance, so given an infinte span of time for that chance to emerge...

Sorry, not understanding statistics does not make yours an actual proof of God.
