You have to be as careful as you would anywhere else. One time I bid on a very expensive camera and I won it for a very low price-the ol' too good to be true-so I didn't pay immediately. I received an email from ebay reporting that the person that placed the ad was not the person whose name was used. He would have taken my money and run and I would not have gotten the camera. I have also been approached to buy without going thru ebay. In such case you lose all protection provided by ebay and Paypal. Always pay thru paypal so that your personal information is not given to people you don't know. I also received something that was broken and it had been mailed but I would have lost the price of shipping which was substantial from a nasty seller but ebay convinced him to return my full payment. I also understand that the Royal Mail - Great Britain - is not reliable. You need to check out the buyer's reputation, read what they say they will do if you are not satisfied-return policy-, check out insurance etc. Some will say they are not responsible once the item is shipped so if it is lost in the mail, you are screwed and it is up to you to insure or get proof of mailing. You read all that is said and if you are willing to buy under those circumstances, then you have a contract with that person. If you bid, you must pay. Ebay and Paypal offer some protection from scams but use your common sense. I have bought many great things and have just started buying thru Live Auctions and bought some beautiful rings. LOL.

Ebay is just as safe as anywhere else to shop online.
Just make sure that you check the feedback rating of the seller...read some of their feedbacks left for them by clicking on the number that is beside their id name. You can see what positive things were said about them and also any negative. STAY AWAY from those w/questionable feedback.

Also just make sure that you TOTALLY read all of the listing to avoid any miscommunications or misunderstandings as to the item/quality/condition/pricing/shipping etc.....

And if you have any questions regarding any aspect of the listing, click on the "ask seller question" link and you can contact the seller via ebay messaging for clarification.

HAVE FUN AND GOOD LUCK!

Very safe with a Pay Pal account. But really look over the offerings, and if you are confused, send a question to the seller BEFORE you bid! And ALWAYS know the shipping charge before bidding--things from Canada can cost $50 to ship to the U.S., and other international locations are atrocious, too.
Don't buy from sellers with a positive feedback of less that 98%. That means that 1 out of 50 people who bought from them were unhappy with the deal, and when you are 1,000 miles away there's not much you can do if the seller is uncooperative.

Yes, but pay careful attention to the details, like dimensions, colors, etc. I've never had a problem buying on ebay.

Yup, just check the seller's feedback (number next to the stars by his/her name) to see what other buyers have to say about him.

I wouldn't recommend you buy something from a person with less than 90% feedback, or a feedback score of 20 or less.

I'm addicted to it completely...ebay's fine, the trouble I have is with security breeches in paypal, but they teach you what to do to avoid those. As long as you buy from members with good feedback and are careful with what paypal emails your respond to your fine!

btw-why is this in weddings? not really the appropriate section huh?

I have used ebay quite often, both to sell and to buy. I've only had a few bad experiences on both ends.

However, the best answer to your question is:

CAVEAT EMPTOR!

It is for some things, but you just need to be careful and read the feedback that has been written about the seller and use your initiative

I've shopped on E-bay many times and have never had any problems at all. It's very secure.
