sounds like it could be a magnesium deficiency, which causes muscles to spasm and tense up; magnesium is needed by the muscles to 'unlock' when they tighten.

I was getting charlie horses in my calves of my legs due to low potassium. I had been taking water pills and this caused the low potassium. I have also heard athletes cramp up like that due to dehydration too.

I don't know what caused them, but it could be a blood clot, so never rub your leg when experiencing a charlie horse. Also when one is occuring, take your toes in hand and pull back or I should say up to your shins. This will hurt, but will take the pain away sooner.

i use a chinese litiment called zheng gu shui . it comes in a red box. You can buy it at any chinese grocer. You rub it on and it stops cramps instantly.
I also had sucess with magnesium . Take it with calcium . Something like Solgar calcium magnesium & zinc is good from a man up in years. You have to have Calcium magnesium in a two to one ratio.
Make sure to replace minerals you sweat out or loose from drinking coffee. Coffee makes you deficient in magnesium . Anything diuretic can wash out minerals. Eat more beans and greens. Prunes are good sources for magnesium. Don't drink the beverage hot! eat whole grains they have minerals . Stuff like buckwheat pancakes (FRESH!). Pinto beans and cheese for breakfast.

You may have exercised a little too much the day before and did not replenish your system with the water and potassium needed. It happens to me a lot if I have been on my feet a lot the day before. Gatorade and Powerade help.

I don't know, but I hate those. I used to get them all the time while sleeping, too.

A trick: If you can manage to grab your foot and pull the front part of it up so that the front of your foot is angling upward, it releases the muscle cramp.

The answer is dehydration. Before you go to bed, drink water and you should be ok. If you sweat alot while you sleep, try turning on a fan or using less covers.

You are possibly suffering from a potassium deficiency. Eat a banana a day for 3 days and see if that relieves your problem. If it does....eat more bananas. :-)

Aren't those horrible? It is from laying in a certain position, and you get a kink in the muscle. I get relief by immediately jumping out of bed and standing on my feet.

The pain is excruciating, I empathize.
