So I will be making the big move to Los Angeles in August, and am starting to look for a place to live. I may only be able to come out there once before I sign a lease, so it sucks being so far away. I am a college student living with my best friend, and we are looking for a place in a safe area of LA close to where we will be going to school, Santa Monica College. Any suggestions?

Santa Monica is a rent control city. Which means you will have trouble finding an apt. But if you do, you can count on not being forced out by rising rents. You may want to check craigslist.org for a sharing option.

The closer you are to the beach, the higher the rent. Also factor in higher gas prices, insurance, and the ever-lovin' traffic.

Safe maybe a problem. Anywhere under the jurisdiction of the LAPD and it's a crap-shoot. I suggest almost any incorporated with it's own police department, with the exception of Compton, or the LA CO Sheriff, ie West Hollywood.

However SMCC is one of the better Community Colleges, and you save a bundle by getting your first two years there.

Some of the safest communities in CA are Thousand Oaks area and Simi Valley. But that means a murderous commute (no pun intended.)

Remember to wear the uniform, baseball cap, sunglasses and lots of sunscreen.

Don't move here, it's to crowded. I've never been to kentucky, but I grew up in Cal. and I bet the people are way more genuine in kentucky than they are here. Santa Monica is nice. There are a lot of homeless people near the beach, but there are a lot of nice apartments and area's around there. Look on craigslist Los angeles, pennysaver and the L.A times for apartments. Search santa monica on mapquest and you'll be able to see cities around the area. Malibu is north of santa monica, but that's way expensive, venice is south of santa monica, wierdos everywhere, but it's fun to see, yet it's kinda sad to figure out your car was stolen after you've been searching for it all day. JK! culver city, it's more inland close to LAX. Good luck!

Why would you choose to go a community college (which S.M. college is) in Santa Monica? For what you will spend in just rent, you could go to a wonderful 4 year college in the midwest.

L.A. is not what you see on T.V. It has a population of 13 million people- from all over the world. The beaches aren't even that great, compared to Florida. The mountains are cool, but not really worth the high cost of living. And it still gets pretty chilly in the winter.

Prepare yourself for a culture shock. If I were you, I would try to meet some on line friends such as a pen pal from the Santa Monica area. They can let you know what areas are nicer. Traffic is horrible there so you won't want to live far from school. Good luck and be safe.

Santa Monica is an"ultra lefty" town, if you get my inference. You may find some of the beach cities south of Santa Monica, or parts of Los Angeles proper east of it a little more normal. Every thing you find in that part of Southern California is going to be older, and close together.

There is no such thing as a safe place in Los Angeles..If you are going to college, you will need not just one roommate but several. Rent here is rediculious. Your going to end up paying $1,800 a month in rent for a crappy apartment in the ghetto

I would recommend the Westwood area.

It's a great safe place, close to Santa Monica.

Westwood is where UCLA is located.

Good Luck with the move!
