That is a really good question that kind of has me stumped, but actually you lick the salt first. I supposed it has something to do with the salt and lime or lemon taking some of the kick out of the vile substance. Perhaps it has something to do with the salt covering some of the flavor, although I must admit it has never really worked for me for masking the taste of the horrible stuff. usually the only thing that works for me is chasing it down with a swig of beer or something else to take away the taste.

Technically speaking...you lick the salt first them slam the shot and follow with the lime. You do this with cheap tequila that tastes what you envision the backside of a buffalo to taste like. If you try a top-shelf tequila like Patron or even better, Tres Generations, you simply need to chill and shoot. No salt or lime required because it is smooth as smooth can be. No nasty aftertaste that you have to try to conceal with the salt or lime. A bottle of Patron Silver will run you about $30 at the liquor store and has never given me a hangover after consuming the entire bottle. It has made me blackout though and made spots of time disappear where I did or said strange things that I normally would not do. Give the top-shelf a try and you will not be disappointed.

Usually you'd want to lick the salt first, then take the shot and then suck on a lemon or lime.
They're both to help with the shock of it and the really awful taste. =)

You lick the salt, take the shot, then suck on lime - it's like a personal margarita with every shot! yum - I love it!!!

It's salt first, then the shot, then the lime. But I have no clue why. It does have a nasty taste on it's own.
