Yes, they also have the right to give you a "boot to the head" if you don't answer. Haven't you been reading about how horrible our government treats illegal aliens?

The immigration officer has the right to ask any question pertaining to your application for admission to the United States or for benefits from the American government. That will include investigating the length and purpose of your trip and what reasons you may have for deception.

From your English, I suspect you misunderstood the question, but something along the lines of 'won't your wife miss you?' may be appropriate to check your reaction: will you miss your wife? You may have lied about having a wife in the first place, and your reaction will reveal this to the officer.

I remember someone getting very upset with an INS officer for asking about his relationship with a woman he was traveling with. He had claimed that the young woman was family, though she was not a wife, sister, cousin or daughter. The officer looked him dead in the eye and asked:

'Are you a smuggler trafficking this woman to sell her into sex slavery?'
His answer (of course) was 'No!'
'Can you prove that you're not a smuggler?' Asked the officer. There was a silence.
'No.' replied the man.
'Well I can. That's why I ask the questions. Can I continue?'

They did, and the officer went about his business of not deporting someone because they accidentally gave him bad information (they were not family).
