It is speculated that when one is in love the brain releases a hormone called dopamine. This is a 'feel good' hormone - this drug is for instance used to treat depression. Just as you can't control when your body releases other hormones, like adrenaline, you can't control this. It will later be released less and less till you do not get that 'feeling' anymore.

There is a release of neurotransmitters in the brain during the infatuation stage of courting. Infatuation is the beginning when you have hot-monkey-sex and can't get enough of each other, and nothing they do annoys you - these are the same chemicals released if you take cocaine, and the same chemical -serotonin, is released during infatuation as when people, literally, go insane. Same chemicals. I believe the other one is norepinephrine, and maybe dopamine too.

It's all a very heady experience. If you've experienced the infatuation stage, then you understand how it works. It is, literally, intoxicating, having your brain flooded with these chemicals. STrong stuff.

It is caused by dopamine and norepinephrine and low amounts of serotonin (which is also common in patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, which is why people often "obsess" about their partners)

dopamine causes the feeling of pleasure and happiness, whereas the norepinephrine is like adrenaline, which is why your heartbeat gets illregular when you're around people you love.

These chemicals are based in the frontal part of the cortex, which is why people don't normally feel true love until their brain has developed enough (usually around 17, 18 or 19)

=) as for controlling it? I know norepinephrine and serotonin are a major part of anti-depressant medication, but that's for enhancing one's ability to be happy, not reverse it..

I don't know that falling in love actually causes a chemical reaction but kissing, being with someone you are fond of, sex and other pleasurable activities cause endorphins to be released. Pleasure centers are activated and the other answers are correct, it's mind blowing. We seek out these effects again and again.

A hug for instance, reinforces intimacy which assists in bonding which brings about sexual activity which is intended to reproduce our species, and THAT, honey, is what makes the world go round.

Sorry, but I don't think these things are within your control unless you limit your contact with the objects of your affection. Good luck with that one!

anyway, no, we can't control love. maybe some could but in my case i can't. i did try but i'd get at my wits end. i agree with one of the answers 'love is addictive like heroin'. you feel high and it seems taking you to heaven even though the reality is you're in hell. chemical reaction in our mind... hmmm... i guess it's a reaction that makes us crazy or worse, insane. what i want to know is the antidote to this insanity we acquire because of love. let me know if you have one. :D
