First is range: Human hearing maxes out at 20-20,000 hertz, so any speaker boasting a high-range of 35,000hz is wasting your time, unless it's for your dog.
Subs: A good subwoofer is essential if you want to feel the rockets go off in your games, or you just like to see grandma's belly bounce when you crank up your tunes...the amount of power (measured in watts) needed is up to you, and the size of the room your system is in...but 20Watts is a good start.
S/N ratio: The Signal-to-Noise ratio is determined by the quality of the components used to build the setup, and lower numbers (measured in decibles[db])are best.
