Walking twice as far, or running half as far?

I also heard that doing either of the above mentioned when it was cold burns more calories than doing it in warm weather. Is that true?

The best for you is what's best for YOU. Walking burns about 400 calories per mile. Running the same mile burns about twice as much in half the time. Running is also harder on the joints, and older people generally do better walking.
During cold weather our body's metabolism burns hotter to keep us warm, so it does use more calories in the cold, but that is pretty much independent of exercise.
These days, walking for an hour a day is the recommendation for long-term health.

Well I can't help ya with the cold vs warm part but it's all about heartbeat when burning calories. Getting your heart rate up and keeping it at a consistant level. Building muscle, running half as far or walking twice as far is probably about even but you're looking for calories which means as I stated earlier, heartrate. If I had to take a guess I'd say run half as far and then push yourself the rest of the way OR run half as far and then finish it off walking. You might not be able to do it the first time, but you will by the fifth or sixth. Just stick with it.

You'll burn the same amount of calories. If it's cold, & you're warm, that could cause unneccessary stress on your muscles & lungs.

Walking is more low impact than running, which means it's easier on your joints.

I recommend alternating days. Walk one, run the next. Or you could walk for 2 minutes, run for 1, walk for 2, run for 1, & so on

But you should check w/ your doctor to get a more personalized plan, depending on your activity level & etc

Um... I'm not exactly sure.. but the best idea for you might be to run then walk, run the walk... vary your steps for say 5 min each time.

Yes, it's true, I do believe you burn a slight bit more when you run in cold weather, but when its really hot I believe its the same effect. It's the same concept as drinking warm water as compared to ice cold water... speeds up your metabolism.

The best way to lose calories is to run and walk. Try a mile a day. About the cold and hot thing, that's a myth !
