Southwest is cattle-call airlines; no pre-assigned seating and lots of people tend to end up in the pre-boarding queue. They attract a lot of families with small kids because their prices are lower than some of the other carriers. If it were my mom, I would spring the extra money for a ticket on another carrier that has preassigned seating and a little more organized boarding process. For a young, able-bodied person, "first come, first served" seating even with boarding groups is an annoyance; for an elderly woman, it may be overwhelming and confusing. I am not saying the flight attendants will not help your mom, only that you can't 100% count on it because there are so many travellers needing assistance on their flights. She will probably get better attention and assistance flying with another carrier.

Southwest does not allow people to pick a seat online. However, 24 hours before the flight commences, you may print off a boarding pass for the plane. Being in the "A" group will put passengers on the plane first, so that is my recommendation. If your mother needs help, she can always go onto the plane during the pre-boarding process and have extra time to get to the plane and get a better seat on the plane.

Not on Southwest Airlines but she can pre-board if she requests special assistance. They will make sure an 85-year old gets seated, haha. Although I think that Southwest Airlines is terrible. And almost every single time I book a ticket - which is almost 100 times a year - Southwest is never the cheapest.

Im not sure how SWA is now, but when I bought a ticket about 6 months ago, the sooner you "check in" either online or at the desk, the best selection of a seat you get
Either A (first registrants) B (second) C(last of the last)
Not sure if this is the same method, prob give them a call if you have plenty of time and patience

SWA is not set up for advanced seat selection. But since your mother is 85, she can request wheelchair service and get to board first.

No, but she can board first and get help getting settled on board. Not a problem.
