As Wes points out, tough haris, such as the ones that kiwi fruits have physically block certain insects.. Can you imagine a beetle wriggling between the hairs to get to the fruit?

It is to heip keep the bugs off. Much like other fruit they have some kind of skin to help keep the insects off.
