A small, hard, pathological concretion, composed chiefly of cholesterol, calcium salts, and bile pigments, formed in the gallbladder or in a bile duct.
Gallstones are common--they occur in approximately 20% of women in the US, Canada and Europe--but there is a large variation in prevalence among ethnic groups. For example, gallstones occur 1 ½ to 2 times more commonly among Scandinavians and Mexican-Americans. Among American Indians, gallstone prevalence reaches more than 80%. These differences probably are accounted for by genetic (hereditary) factors. First-degree relatives (parents, siblings, and children) of individuals with gallstones are 1 ½ times more likely to have gallstones than if there were not a first-degree relative with gallstones. Further support that genetic factors are important in determining who gets gallstones comes from twin studies. Among non-identical pairs of twins (who share 50% of their genes with each other), both individuals in a pair have gallstones 8% of the time. Among identical pairs of twins (who share 100% of their genes with each other), both individuals in a pair have gallstones 23% of the time.

Yes, William Gallstone, for whom this illness was named, was a very wise and important former Prime Minister of Great Britain who just happened to suffer from chronic gallstone attacks. Yet despite these frequent attacks and a lack of proper medical attention, Mr. Gallstone overcame such overwhelming pain and left his mark on the history books. I just marvel at his accomplishments while living in constant pain. Yes, William Gallstone was truly a remarkable figure. Of course, you need not worry as William Gallstone obviously did because of today's advanced medicine.

I'd first have to tell you about bile. Bile is manufactured by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Bile is made up of water, cholesterol, fats, bile salts proteins and bilirubin. Too much cholesterol, bile salts or bilirubin can cause bile to harden into stones. There are two types of stones - cholesterol stones are primarily cholesterol and pigment stones are primarily bilirubin. They can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball. You can have one large stone or hundreds of tiny stones. You can have combinations of sizes. Stones can become lodged in the ducts that carry bile from the liver to the small intestine or in the ducts that open into the common bile duct. Depending on the duct, obstruction can cause inflammation of the gall bladder, the ducts, the liver or the pancreas. If you want to know more, you will have to run a search and read for yourself.
