we fought Japan nobody had to learn Japanese.

Do some history. Alot of the soldiers in WW2 learned some german and japanese. They werent required to do so, and werent experts at it but it helps them do their job. Just as it helps in Iraq to learn the language.

You must not be in the military. True, they don't train everyone, but they do have a foreign language institute that they send certain individuals with that specialty code to so that they can learn another language. They offer incentive pay to any troop that speaks another language and can pass a proficiency test. What language they train willing recruits is determined by need of the military and the aptitude of the individual.

We had thousands of Japanese speaking soldiers in the Army and they played an important role.

We would like to understand what they are saying. We are working with and training people who speak Arabic, not just fighting them.

we'll be fighting people in the war on terror. majority of these people speak arabic. it helps broader communicaions and help reduce cultural difference

which army? u dint mention, if its western country so they decided to accopy all arab contries like they did with Iraq, Saudi, Kuwait..
