Perhaps this site may be of some help. I have an HP pavillion 743. When my partition recovery would not work, I had to use the recovery CD's (6 cds). The CD's came with very clear instruction but still I had to try a few times before I was successful. So keep trying and dont give up. It can take quite awhile to install.
This site has clear and easy instructions to follows for installing windows on an HP computer, but may help with any kind of puter. Good luck.

What version of Windows are you using? You might want to boot with your Windows Installation CD and do a 'detect and repair'.
