Even if the ring has real gold content in it, yellow gold reacts with a lot of womens' skins. The problem with your skin is that you have too much acid in it and it is causing the black ring on your finger. Coat the inside of the ring with a single layer of clear nail polish. Wait until it is dry and then put it back on. You will have to do this about once a month if it is a ring that doesn't leave your finger often. I take my rings off at night to let my skin breathe.
This black ring condition has happened to me many times and I can't wear costume jewelry. So its not the ring but your chemical composition of your skin oils and secretions that are causing your "black ring".

Sounds like it might not be a 14 carat gold ring.

I have the same prob if I wear yellow gold not white, I was told that its b/c your skin has a certain acid that reacts to the gold, I can't wear sterling silver earrings or any yellow gold unless its 24 carat

its probally 14 karat gold plated and from wearing it so much the gold plating wears off and the cheap metal underneath causes the dark ring.

It is not solid gold or you have a rare allergy, typically thought it is indicative that you have been ripped off. It is not soild gold but cheaply plated.
