Just seeing if anyone else noticed that the Army commerical ads are more about giving people money to join and help pay for college, but the Marine commerical ads are more focused on building you into a stronger person mentally and physically. I know that all the services offer the same thing, money for college , enlistment bonuses and stuff like that. It just seems the army is just trying to buy people to join, and have been doing it for a long even before the war on terror started

A better question would be why the Marines dont show marines doing the jobs available. They sell you on the image of being a marine because that is the main thing they offer. The Marines actually give you less total money usually for college and other bonuses. The Army sells you on money for bonuses and college because that is their main offer, but they also show you jobs in their ads. Since the pay is the same, and promotions depend on mos, people need to decide if they want more money or the Marine image.

All the services do not offer the same things.

The Army "GUARANTEES" the exact job, the exact college money amount, the bonus amounts and additional training (airborne, language, ranger, etc) BEFORE the person joins.

The Marines only guarantee that the person will be a Marine, nit the job. The Marine may end up as a Laundry & Bath Specialist on a Navy ship, washing underwear.

The Army is also the only branch that can offer a $71,000 College Fund and a bonus up to $40,000.

The Army needs 80,000 people this year, where as the Marines are only trying to enlist around 15,000. Which do you think will give the most.

Think of it this way, unless you are coming straight out of high school with stars and stripes in your eyes, or there is some major event like 9/11, you aren't going to be getting much in the way of people signing up just for duty, honor, and country. The military of today is all about trying to get as many highly qualified and intelligent individuals as possible. Ergo, they not only have to entice you with the ability to become technically trained in your area of interest, but they need to be competetive with the civilian world. This is doubly true now that we're in the middle of a pretty unpopular conflict right now.

The Marines and the Army are going to play on towards the image that they project on recruits. The Marines will focus on the image of making you into superman while the Army will focus on education, training, and money. In the end, it is all a sales pitch just like any other commercial. It is all geared towards getting you to "buy their product".

The suggestion that Marines are entrance line and the Army is aid is laughable. Ever heard of Airborne Infantry, a Green Berets, Delta Force, Paratroopers, and Rangers? Every a type of are higher fitted to fight than general marines, or even the various Marine Recon. And it is a famous incontrovertible fact that the seventy fifth Ranger Regiment is the Spear head of America's whole navy. Marines are absolutely a few hard SOB's, however they do not stack up in opposition to the Army.

Its more or less a sales pitch. Nothing wrong with it. They are using what will sell the army or marines to those interested. They have probably done surveys to find out people joining the marines are more discipline minded-looking for a tough challenge while those in the army might be looking at it as more of a career move and are more interested in the benefits.

Yep. The Army needs the most people so they get more money for bonuses and all that good stuff. The Marine Corps has the advantage of keeping its training tougher, since it doesn't need so many people. But don't be fooled, you can do great things in any branch.

The army is the meat and potatoes of the military. It's been that way for ages, and frankly, with the number of direct military conflicts we've entered (not that they are right or wrong), the usual calls to honor and duty aren't competing with a growing economy that has many, many less hazardous occupations and no requirement for extended periods of enlistment that are (surprisingly) not fun, rewarding, or broadening.

I've never seen a commercial for a military branch that does a decent job of representing the reality of the regimentation, the suppression individual wants and needs (for the purpose of creating uniformity and discipline), as well as the reality of military pay.

I think it is a matter of a reality check -- one that pays.

The Army is the biggest military branch, and therefore the hardest to fill. They have to find marketing that will appeal to the masses. The Marine Corps, on the other hand, is the smallest, and needs to attract fewer people.

Yeah I noticed that too - you also have to watch the newest batch of Army and Marine advertisements, because Bush wants more people in those branches, and guess who he asked to handle the recruitment plan? his new secretary of defense, the ex-CIA chief from the late cold war era (can't remember his name at the moment). So you can expect some very "interesting" recruitment methods coming soon.
