You can use treat, praise or toy motivation for doing tricks (whatever gets your dog excited and motivated to do a command). Lift your dogs paw and shake it while saying "Shake" or "Shake a paw". After doing it give him a treat or lots of praise and repeat. It should take a few days of 15 minutes a day to get this to be old habit for them and they will start raising their paw on their own. Remember if the dog raises his paw even in the slightest, LOTS of praise! Good luck!

Sit and shake hands

This is one of the easiest tricks to teach to a dog. First you must teach your dog to sit on command. Probably the easiest way to teach a dog to sit on command is to have a treat (dog biscuit, piece of cheese, etc.) on your hand, lift it up above the dog's nose and say 'sit!'. If the dog is standing and tries to grab the treat, don't let him get it, but repeat the same maneuver again. When he sits, immediately give him the treat and praise him. Repeat the trick a few times.

Another way to teach a dog to sit on command is very simple but takes a little more time: each time you see that your dog is going to sit, tell him to 'sit!' and praise him when he does that (+ give a treat). It doesn't take very many repetitions for the dog to realize what the command is for, but this still takes longer than the above mentioned method.

Some poeple suggest you to teach a dog to sit on command by pressing his butt on the ground while saying 'sit!'. I suggest you first try the other two methods though, just to see how easy it is to teach a dog even without using force. Later, once he has clearly understood the meaning of the command 'sit!' you can use this method if he doesn't obey you. Try to be gentle though, there's no point in causing the dog pain when teaching him tricks.

Once your dog has learned to sit on command, you can proceed to 'shaking hands'. Give him the command ('say hello!' or whatever), and gently hold his paw with your hand and give him a treat with another hand. Repeat this a couple of times -- most dogs learn this very fast, if your timing (the command + the praise and treat) is right.

My Border Collie has a yes and a no paw.Her right paw is YES and her left paw NO. I kept asking her for her paw lifting it as i ask her. Praised her and made a big fuss as you do. They when she was giving me her paw i started saying your yes paw. When she got used to doing that i started lifting her left paw.Eventually as teaching her this she got used to it and now gives you a yes or no paw if you ask her anything. She is really funny if you ask her does she want to go out a walk she keeps her yes paw up above her head to make sure you have seen her do it.I am so proud of her, It does take patients don't be shouting at the dog because it won't do what you want it too. I learnt her by using it like a game. As long as your dog is enjoying it's self and getting plenty of love and attention when you are able too .What more can a dog want only to be loved.

Get your dog to sit in front of you, touch and gently lift the paw while saying the command 'paw', if you bring a treat into the equation your dog will soon learn to shake hands on command :)

My boyfriend trained his dog to do "paw" which is where he lifts his paw up at you and puts it in your hand. It's so cute! We're currently training my puppy to do that.

You have to have a lot of patience to do it. I don't use a clicker because my dog is scared of the noise and to me it makes no sense, plus that click all the time annoys the crap out of me.

Anyways what he did and what he taught me to do was to sit or squat @ your dog's level and tell your dog to "sit." Once your dog is sitting you then take your dog's paw and say say "paw" in a firm voice and give him/her a treat. You have to repeat doing this and making sure you say paw and giving your dog a teat.

I don't know how long it's suppose to take before the dog knows the trick, because it's different for each dog. Good Luck. I think it's the cutest trick, I tell my boyfriend's dog to sit and do paw and he sticks his paw (almost larger than my hand) in my hand and looks @ me for a treat.

I'm happy to answer this question because I've been so impressed with this method myself with my Great Dane :-)

CLICKER TRAINING IS THE WAY TO GO!

you can read about it here: http://www.clickertrain.com/whatis.html

You get immediate results! I taught my dog how to sit and wait and lay down in about 15 mins with clicker training!

I was having trouble with my newly adopted Great dane, I don't think she'd ever been taught or trained a day in her life, but my mother-in-law fosters dogs for GA Heartland and happened to have a clicker on her. I was saying over and over sit, lay down ... etc.. (you get the idea..) but luckilly she was there to help!

Basically, you talk to her, asking for her paw or say whatever you want.. like "shake" & pick up her paw and say good girl and click your clicker! Give her a treat.
After a few minutes, stop picking up her paw and simply ask for it or say "shake."
Use the same words everytime you say it so it doesn't confuse her. Once she does it right, click the clicker immediately and reward her. The idea behind the clicker is to get her to associate her good behaviour with that sound & your words.

Give her treats when she gets it right. It won't take but a few minutes for her to figure it out because 1. she WANTS to please you, and 2. she wants that treat!

You can use it all the time and train for just about anything!

Good luck & hope this helps!

our 2 dogs both shake hands and we use the simple command of paw, try starting off with their favourite treat and pick up the paw and say "paw" and let go, repeat over and over but not with treats yet. Then slowly introduce treats into it . The main thing is start without treats and lifting the paw and then using treats once they get it and then stopping the treats so they dont just listen when their is a reward.

Have the dog sit in front of you. Tap its right foot and say "shake." The dog will automatically lift its paw when you tap it, so take the paw in your hand and shake it. Keep practicing, and soon you won't have to tap the foot; you will be able to say "shake" and the dog will lift its paw and let you shake it.

When you want him to shake you say shake and then sweep his paw into your hand then say good boy or whatever. Do this repeatedly after a few days he'll start to do it on his own when he does give him treats and pet him

Show him a dog cookie... say to him "shake a paw" then reach down and pick up his paw and shake it... then give him a cookie. After awhile, when you say "shake a paw" he'll lift up his paw to you to shake it with you. Be sure to always reward him with a cookie.
