Answering the first question - not so much a trend as a cycle - we go through a cycle of "dark" movies every decade, or maybe even less - like every 5 years. We're just on that end of the cycle right now.
The second question - how do you teach your children to be aware of the stuff in the medias? (TV, movies, newspapers, books) You start early, when they are about age two, watching cartoons. Ask them leading questions like - do you think that someone can really get up so quickly if you hit them with a frying pan? Then guide them by the answer they give. Teach them from that early age that the things in cartoons and movies are in no way reality- they are made up, just like dreams are. keep reinforcing that - AND don't take them to age -inappropriate movies.(Know someone who took her then 9 year old to see Jeepers Creepers then wondered why he had nightmares for weeks after - DUH!)
If you reinforce that, you will find they grow up to be critical thinkers and wil be less likely to fall prey to any manner of conman. Or media ype.

well there are some graphic movies out there, but its the parents responsibility to control what their children watch. Its all how you bring your child up in this world today. If I was you i wouldn't be worried about movies when there is so much other stuff going on around them you have no control over.

There is an abundance of evil. The Bible says that children will grow more disobedient to their parents in the last days- and we seem to be facilitating that as a society.
We need to prepare our kids for spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:10ff). We need to be careful with what they are allowed to watch, while at the same time teaching them to be wise about the world.

Evil is an excuse to keep your minds of real issues. It drafts your attention away from the real evils in Church and Government.
Pay attention to reality and quit worrying about movies.

Are you not screening your children's movies? Then it's your responsibility. This is a parental role. If you are concerned about parents taking responsibility, talk to the parents.
And, no, there's no larger scale conspiracy. Art tends to move in clusters.

why hide the ugliness of the world from them, take more energy showing the goodness than hiding the bad, otherwise they would be truly sheltered

I agree with you! I don't think there is a way to teach them that. They just won't understand until they are much older. As parents we just have to shield them from it as best we can.

Throw some Care Bears into the VCR! Fast! lol...Amen man. I totally agree...it is making our youth insensitive to death, killing, sex, drugs, prejudice, crude humor, disrespect and immorality.

Faith in honesty and good character is slowly dying...if the world does not continue to upkeep these virtues and propagate them, it will slowly get more evil.
Sin reaps more sin.
