I would agree with everyone to date - the charm of Italy lies in discoverering it yourselves. Italians are wonderful people, particularly outside the busy cities. If I could give you one tip, it would be to learn some simple Italian phrases before you leave. You will find Italians far more receptive to your attempts to communicate with them in their own language than many other nationalities!
May is a perfect time - weather is stable but not yet too hot. Public transport is inexpensive (in N. European terms) and most major train stations have automatic ticket machines in a variety of languages, including English. You don't need to book your ticket in advance. Most major towns and cities have tourist information centres in or near the rail stations, so you can go where you please!
If you're interested in finding the 'hidden' Italy for something differerent, please see my website listed below.
Buon vacanze {happy holiday)

Why do people want tour guides, make your own trip as you go, it's so much more rewarding and you see things in a different way. The whole fun of traveling is the unknown adventure. You can buy a Lonely Planet Italy book and look for each city you would like to travel to and it has so much info on sights to see, restaurants to eat, places to stay, night life etc... Tour guides cost extra money and you have no independance on where you want to explore. Do it yourself and make it interesting.

Well, if you are determined to get a tour guide, so be it, but I think Italy is so easy to do on your own. Just walking through the streets anywhere will have you stumbling across wonderment everywhere. And in the big cities there are so many tour groups that you can just listen in.

I would DEFINITELY suggest traveling independently. It's very easy (Italy is sooo tourist-friendly) and you can really tailor it to your needs.
If you're stubborn wusses then try the tour operator below.
