I was told to start vaccinating my pom puppies at 8 wks. They are only 4 wks now, but I would like to know which vaccinations are necessary? I have done some research and have found conflicting information on vaccinations. What do you all think. Thanks for your help.

There are some vaccinations that should be given depending on what part of the country you live in. But there is a basic set of vaccinations all puppies need.

Against which diseases should puppies be vaccinated?

The AVMA Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents' Report on Cat and Dog Vaccines has recommneded that the core vaccines for dogs include distemper, canine adenovirus-2 (hepatitis and respiratory disease), and canine parvovirus-2.

Noncore vaccines include leptospirosis, coronavirus, canine parainfluenza and Bordetella bronchiseptica (both are causes of 'kennel cough'), and Borrelia burgdorferi (causes Lyme Disease). Consult with your veterinarian to select the proper vaccines for your puppy.

There are 2 good charts at the below site that may be very helpful to you.

What you read ont he internet is not always correct. Your vet will tell you that the vaccinations are ALL the same for EVERY breed of dog. Some vaccinations begin very early in their life, while others are given a little later. Also, remember that there are vaccinations that are suggested to be taken annually or perhaps semi annually.

A pomeranian will get the same treatment as any other dog. Ive had a pom, cocker spaniel, shitzu, bichon frise, german shepherd, lab, doberman, retriever, pug and chow...ALL THE SAME VACCINATIONS!!

None are conflicting with the other. If the researchers and vets knew that they conflicted...they wouldnt give them.

The 1st vaccination should be done at 6-8 weeks old, preferably before they go to new homes, they should have their first shots already. The 1st vaccination is for distemper, parvovirus and hepatitis.
The 2nd vaccination should be done at 12-14 weeks old, this vaccination is for distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis and canine cough.
The 3rd vaccination is done at 16-18 weeks of age. This vaccination covers distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis and canine cough.
The annual booster shot should be done EVERY 12 months. This is for the prevention of distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis and canine cough.

make sure they get a good wormer soon, and then around 8 weeks.
I am not sure about the shots tho, sorry. All I know is that my puppy was wormed before he turned 8 weeks old.

There are 'essential' and non-essential vaccinations and it all depends on your lifestyle.

Hope this helps!

Distemper or DHLPPC

Rabies
Lyme (if you live in an area or will be taking the puppy into areas where he/she could get ticks)
