this is getting to the point where I just want to squash the darn bird. And don't say give it away! that is NOT a solution. However, it does need to stop doing what it is doing! Everytime I allow the cockatiel to come out of it's cage it attacks my cat and dogs! My cat tries to get away. she is really scared. When my cockatiel pecked her today, you could tell that she was hurt. I'm truly concerned for my cats well being. The dogs are no help because they are scared of the bird too. I'm so afraid that it is going to peck my cats eye out when I'm not around. The cage doesn't have a door. So, it comes out sometimes when I'm not home. I'm afraid that I'll come home to a dead cat that was attacked by this heartless feathered freak of a bird! what can I do?

You need to get a new cage. That's step number one.

Step number two is not tolerating the behavior. When your bird does this, pick him up, tell him no and put him back into his cage. If you can't pick up up with your hands, then towel him back to his cage. It's imperative that you get a cage that you can contain him with, or your life is destined to be hell for as long as he survives. Which, probably won't be long because eventually, that cat's going to smarten up and realize that he's higher on the food chain.

If you must integrate the animals (and I'm not telling you that this is a good idea by any stretch of the imagination), then you need to gently introduce them. Praise them both for positive interactions.

What I see that is happening is that the cockatiel is "defending" his territory. Since you don't have a door on your cage, his territory has gone well beyond the bounds of the cage.

I would also clip his wings, but don't do that until after you've got a cage with a door. If you clip his wings now, it could be his death sentence, because then he won't be able to get away from the bigger animals.

Good luck...

(PS...you can probably pick up an inexpensive used cage on ebay...)

I'd be more worried about the cockateil. No matter how scared your cat seems I can assure you that you are much more likely to come home to a dead bird then an eye less cat.

It is irresponsible pet owning to keep your bird near cats and dogs, particularly if the cage has no door. Keeping a bird in a cage with no door is also irresponsible. Your bird should not be aloud out when you are not around as they can get into a lot of trouble and hurt or even kill it self.

Have a think and ask yourself, should you really be owning pets if these are the conditions you keep them in?

Just remember, YOU set the rules, not the bird. Get a cage with a door. Might even want to get a bigger cage so he (she?) can have a bird-friend and leave the cat & dog alone.

There is no way you can train the bird to leave the cat and dog alone, if that's the answer you're fishing for.

It's amazing to me that your cage for the cockatiel does not have a door...it should. MAKE ONE, if you can't get a new one just yet. All animals, when they've grown attached to a person, can shown emotions just like we can. Your bird is probably just jealous. Try isolating yourself with the bird for a few days and giving it A LOT OF ATTENTION, they are very vain birds, you know (and I do know because we have 21 cockatiels, varying ages and types)...They need to be played with or at least whistled to/acknowledged multiple times a day, otherwise, they lash out at things/animals/people. You might be next! Don't let it get to that.

dont worry the bird wont kill the cat, but the bird damaging the cats eye is a possibility. Probobly buy a new cage with a door would be the best solution.

Well, since giving to away is not an option, but it in a room and close the door to keep it from attacking the other pets. I really see this as the only solution since you really can't discipline a bird. If you don't want to keep it in the room at all times, at least keep it in there while you are away from home.

I would be more worried the cat will kill the bird, afraid or not, instinct will kick in. Get a new cage.

Most people who have a pet bird keep the wings trimmed so that it cannot fly (only glide downward)

For you the fix is simple; buy a new cage with a door...

Buy a new cage which has a dood that shuts and stays shut ... Only allow it out in one room, and try to train the other pets to stay out of. Leave a TV on in the room that it is in to keep it occupied while you are out. My bird watches
TV.
