Firstly i am sorry to hear about your cat dying of cancer. Apparently with cats, if one is dying or passes away the other will fret and could get sick too. I know that sounds strange but our cat died of cancer (he was 15) and our other was acting terribly strange, running away and running across the road (which she had never done before) then 3 weeks later we found her dead outside our house, she had been hit by a car. The vet said that it is very normal for other animals in the household to act strangely when another animal is in pain or dies. So try to monitor its behaviour, pay it some more attention than usual it needs to feel safe, comfortable and loved. Perhaps let both the cats stay inside for awhile and treat them both to lots of yummy treats and cuddles and spoil them a bit more than usual. goodluck!

It might just be how other cats react to illness. I'm not so familiar with cat behavior, but I just lost my dog last year to Lymphoma, and other dogs even ones that he was good friends with were mean to him, and would growl and try to bite him when we took him for walks. He always looked extremely hurt when this would happen.
And maybe like gold fish attack each other when one is sick.
The only thing that I can think of is that since dogs can smell people and things on a molecular level (like they can detect cancer with their nose) maybe the chemical structure of the other dog changes so they don't really recognize them. I'm sure cats are very similar since their noses are way stronger than ours. Maybe your healthy cat doesn't recognize it, and hiding is his way of coping with an unfamiliar cat. I'm not sure.
I am very very sorry to hear about your cat. I know what you are going through.

I"m not a pet psychologiest, but the well cat may be hiding because he senses that his friend is dying and is afraid of losing him. It may be his way of coping with impending loss. My prayers are with you all.

animals know when something is wrong..she may be mourning. just leave her alone. they deal with this stuff differently than humans. they are much more accepting of it. and the one who is sick may just want to be left alone. your other cat reads your sick cat much better than you can
i lost my cat of 19 yrs last xmas. and come to think of it, the other 2 didn't really pay any attention to her. she really couldn't be consoled. that's when i had her put down. it was so sad. but, she was miserable. it was hard, but i felt i gave her relief. i was there with her thru it. it really is a very peaceful way to go.
god bless you and your babies. you'll know when it's time

They say that animals can smell cancer, so maybe the other one knows that the sick one is very ill.

It might be scared. Or maybe something is wrong with it. Ask your vet or contact an animal behaviourish?
