The benefit to this is the omega-3 and some omega 6 and 9. (Not a joke, I'm serious.) But you won't get the full benefit unless you cut the trans fats from your diet(hydrogenated vegetable oil). Even the FDA has now admitted that trans fats are very bad for us, and Congress has passed a law phasing them out of the American diet over the next year and a half. But why wait? Look at labels and get rid of it--you will be much healthier.
Another thought--there's an vegan product out with all the omega-3 you can use, and it's called Smart Balance, sold at WalMart next to the butter. I've been using it for a while now and have noticed a difference in my health from it. Best of luck.

Hello =)
As a Mahayana Buddhist, and an older person who is somewhat sick, I debate this question within myself from time to time.
I observe certain "vegetarian days" that My Lord Shakyamuni instructed, and sometimes I do not take medications that are animal-derived, and other times I do. Modern insulin is the product of certain bacteria which are animals (strictly speaking), and I ponder over that as well.
The benefits of fish oils are many, and, as you age, they become more important. I think that for me, it would be more appropriate to take the medications and simply say a prayer for those creatures who have given their lives so that I may continue upon my path.
On the other hand, vegetarian days for me are so full of prayers to begin with, I am often tempted just to avoid the medication so I don't have to say additional prayers.....LOL
Namaste,
--Tom

Well - as a former vegetarian... if you're going to stick with your food choices based on moral, ethical or environmental grounds... then - No.
You shouldn't be consuming animal products that require the death of the animal.
Of course - if you're an environmentalist, then you shouldn't consume any fish or ocean based products that are 'naturally caught' as we've decimated the fish populations...
So its really kind of an up to you thing...
