La Quinta Inn, The Stanford Hotel and The radisson all on West 32nd St is a great location. We did eat from 1 food vendor, we had a gyro, but it was all part of a flea market. I would stay away from the vendors, in case you develop a bad case of food poisoning. There are lots of cheap places to eat in this area if you like sushi. And the Sbarro on West 34th street (where Macy's and other great shops are ) is really good. Also, there is a Starbucks on both corners and the subway is on west 34th street by Herald towers.

Manhattan is easy to get around with the use of cabs( park your car and use cabs in the long run it saves you money). I would be more concerned with the rates of the hotels. It is well worth it to stay a few blocks off the main roads, quieter. check orbitz.com for rates. There are so many attractions that it may be easer to check out a part of the city one trip and a different part another trip. Look on a tourist map and mark the places you want to go to then look at the maps and see what hotels are in the area. Unless you are there for a month you can only see a few of the sites anyway.

I stayed at Holiday Inn NEW YORK CITY-MIDTOWN-57TH ST. on my last trip. Service was great, and it was clean. Pulse it was in the same block as Daffys. If you are there to shop you must go to Daffy's. It may be a little out of the way for you. I love to just wonder around the city.
While you are there Don't forget to make time for Macy's and a night of wondering in times square.

Stay away from the cheapest hotels, they tend to be run down, small and dangerous.

When I stay there I try to hit one big meal a day then eat out of delis.

Almost everywhere hotel in Manhattan, especially Times Square are like that. Food Vendor are everywhere but be honest, you really don't know where the meat comes from...

McDonald's maybe a way to save money. In case you get sick, you can sue them.
