Tell your children, that all they do is take, take, take. Tell them you are constantly giving and giving and that they should appreciate what you do.

I used to be a child like that. My mother had enough, to be honest she scared the crap out of me. She told me that I needed to start doing stuff in return or she wouldn't buy me anything anymore (obviously she bought the necessities)

Talk to them. Possibly ask them for suggestions.

Tell them that they are impossible and that you don't know what to do. (obviously you shouldn't do this if they are really young)

Other than that, all I have to say is figure out what it is that makes them think they don't have to do anything or say thank you.

Take them with you to buy cards or gifts for other people's special occasions. Make sure they recognize every mother's day, father's day, birthdays, christmas, etc. even if they just hand make a card at home.

When they receive something, make sure they promptly send a hand-written thank you note.

Hopefully in time they'll realize giving can be just as fun as receiving.

Its our responsibility completely. Make sure they see you being thankful and not wasteful. Don't give them everything-if you do they will end up like Paris Hilton-empty and nothing to strive for. Around Christmas every year we give away many of their old toys to charity, and they love doing it-also if their room starts getting overcrowded with toys, I get rid of some. Don't be afraid to correct your child-even in public. You have to be consistent.

Children are spoiled these days, maybe it is our mistake.
I try my best to show them how poor some people are, I take them to poor area and show them their homes, and always talk to them about how many people are deprived of many things they have.
I also tell them the price of everything, and how expensive life is these days. It works sometimes.

You have to show them what you expect by thanking them also. IF you give them something and they don't say thanks. Say your welcome. when they look at you strange tell them well you are supposed to say thank you. I make my 2 nieces and stepdaughter say please and thank you. But I also do it to show them that adults have to do that also. You can't expect the kids to do something that you are not willing to do yourself.
