A Shirley Temple never has alcohol...
A Shirley Temple is a non-alcoholic cocktail made with Ginger ale, grenadine syrup, and orange juice garnished with a maraschino cherry and slice of lemon[1]. The Ginger ale is commonly substituted with 7-up, Sprite, or similar lemon-lime soft drink, and the orange juice is commonly left out. It is often served to children dining with elders to let them share the experience of drinking a cocktail, which is why it is sometimes called a kiddie cocktail.
The drink was invented by a bartender at Chasen's restaurant in Beverly Hills, CA. It was named for the famous child actress Shirley Temple, who often visited the restaurant.
A Roy Rogers is the same thing, but made with Cola.
A Rob Roy on the otherhand does have alcohol, it consists of Scotch, Sweet Vermouth and Bitters.
FYI - Shirley Temple never cared for Shirley Temples...too sweet!

The magic ingredient is Grenadine. A deep red syrup made from sugar and a cherry-esque flavoring. This is poured in a tall glass with crushed ice along with 7-UP (if you like it classic) or Sprite (if you have no other choice.) Some bartenders will add a touch of pineapple or whatever else they have laying around behind the bar, just a splash though, mind you. The ratio of Soda to Grenadine is such that the color of the drink is a pale and frosty pink. It is usually finished with a maraschino cherry speared through with a miniature sword, which props up an umbrella. Access is through a pair of narrow cocktail straws. This is a drink for children and as such contains no alcohol in the recipe.

A Shirley Temple (for girls) or Rob Roy (for boys) is basically a "drink" for kids. At least I always got it as a kid when the grown ups were having drinks. It is basically 7-Up, Sprite or Ginger Ale, mixed with that juice that is in marachino cherries. I think to make it alcoholic you would use grenadine instead of the cherry juice but I am not sure. It is pretty good and it's very sweet. I always liked them.
