Was he just sitting around Heaven alone being God over nothing?

Wow, acquiring wisdom! That's a good one. This means that God was somewhat less than fully wise at one time. It took him a while to get really wise? He wasn't smart enough to create a Universe until he acquired enough wisdom? Oh, I see.

God doesn't DO. God IS. There is no change in GOD. And God is not in time as the conditioned milieu of God's Being. So there is no before with GOD. God created all that is but in using the word "created" we are speaking as humans. God is the Ground of all being. Now, again in human words, God is ONE yet in the One GOD there are Three co-existent, co-eternal "Persons". Each Person is the One God but not either of the Other Two Persons. In this Godhead there is an eternal "relation" among the Three Divine Persons. There are not Three Gods. There is only ONE GOD with no parts. Perhaps this all seems contradictory, but God can not be known directly by humans anymore than, even less than, a fruit fly can comprehend the human being. There is no correspondance between our being and the Divine Being....except LOVE. Even in us, love has no end. So the LIFE of GOD is Love...eternal love.

Try to follow this if you can ok:

God before He created the universe was in perfect satisfaction in Himself. He needed nothing. God dwelt joyfully alone in eternity. Now, you want more, right? God exists as a Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. John 1:1 remember? The Word (Jesus) was with God in the beginning (from all eternity), right? And the Holy Spirit was there, too (Genesis 1:2). These three were together in fellowship with one another from all eternity. Who knows what they did. Probably God things. They loved each other. We know at some point they discussed redemption (John 6:39; Ephesians 1:4-5; 2 Timothy 1:9; Ephesians 3:11). But everything else lies in mystery.

Aquiring wisdom.

WISDOM SPEAKING
Pro 8:22 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
Pro 8:23 I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
Pro 8:24 When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
Pro 8:25 Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
Pro 8:26 While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
Pro 8:27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
Pro 8:28 When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:

We will ask Him later. He hasn't even answered about what He did after He created this tiny speck of dust called planet earth, because we are just Pilate who asked the question to Jesus:
"What is the truth?" and did not stay to listen to His answer.
Many of us are only asking questions as smart Alexes, but did not really want to hear the Truth. They have been prejudiced by the devil's lies. That's why Jesus said many are actually children of that Father of Lies and Murderers, called Lucifer.

There is no "before" in relation to creation. God created time when he created the physical universe. He exists in Eternity, which is an a-spacial and atemporal state of existence.

He probably was bored. That's why He created the universe, because He knew it would produce the Grand Theft Auto video game series.

Yes, for the most part- however, you have to understand that God also created TIME. He's in a constant now. Don't try to comprehend it. You can't.
