Is your dog an outside dog?? When flies bite dogs they get them right at the tip of their ears, it will leave them crusty and irritated. They begin to bleed when the dog shakes his head like you are describing. Theres no need to rush him to the vet right now, there is a cream that you can get at petco that is just for this and you rub it on the dogs ears and it keeps the flies from getting on him.. look into it!

Something is chewing on it, probably an insect. Is there a scab or "crunchies?" You can put a dab of Bag Balm on the end of the ears every few hours or get some medicated ointment at the pet store or vet.

If you dog shakes her ear a lot, she may have:

1. A haematoma.....like a blood clot in her ear. It is caused by shaking. It is very painful for the dog (hence shaking) and difficult to eliminate. It is a vet visit situation.

2. Also the shaking could be an ear infection, diry ear, or other ear problem.

If the dog seems in distress, get to the vet. It may mean the difference between a happy dog or a deaf dog.

If you live in an area where there are flies and she is outside alot she could have "fly strike". It's basically like tons of fly bites on the tips of the ears which can get quite raw. It could also be that she had an abscess on that ear that busted, and left a "hole" where it drained. In either case, try some hydrogen peroxide, and neosporin (or any antibiotic cream) that can be rubbed in.

My dog had the same thing when we adopted him from the pound. He continues to have it as well. When we asked the vet, she said to monitor it to make sure it didn't get worse. It could be a number of things, most likely insect bites. Of course, I would recommend having the vet check it out, but my vet did not offer much advice except to watch it. Try to keep your dog from scratching it, and if it becomes worse, bring it to the attention of your vet.
