the messiah will be a king. the king of israel, to be specific. the high priest can only be a kohen from the tribe of levi, and the messiah will be from the tribe of judah. therefore the messiah could never be a priest.

David said that the Messiah will be a priest after the order of Melchizedek (Psalm 110 v 4). Melchizedek is the one who met Abraham after Abraham returned from rescuing his nephew Lot (Genesis 14 v 17 - 20). Thus Melchizedek was priest not of the tribe of Levi as Levi was not born yet. Thus the Messiah does not need to come from the tribe of Levi to be a High Priest. The Messiah will be Prophet, Priest and King.

Everything above is from Jewish prophecy. A further note is that Jesus is the only man Who fulfilled and will fulfill all of the Jewish prophecies upon His first arrival and when He comes again. As for example Daniel said "Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks" (Daniel 9 v 25) which is exact day when Jesus came riding into Jerusalem on a donkey, showing that He was the Messiah by other fulfilling another prophecies that the Messiah will ride on donkey into Jerusalem (Zechariah 9 v 9). (A week refers to seven years which have 360 days)
