Hey there jeff,
As many people have already answered, there are 12 pairs of ribs for a normal human. The first seven (1 - 7) pairs of ribs starting from the top are known as the true ribs. These ribs are attached to the vetebral column and 'directly' to the sternum via the coastal cartilages. The next 3, ( 8 - 10) pairs of ribs are known as the false ribs and they are attached to the veterbral column and 'indirectly' to the sternum via the coastal margins. The final two ( 11 and 12) pairs of ribs are also known as floating ribs and they are only attached to the vetebral column, hence their name.
Hope this helps!

There are 12 pairs, but some people have an extra pair in the cervical area, which causes some conditions due to the place where they're at.
