First of all, please don't spend any more than you can realisticaly afford. Its not about the ring, its about whats right for you and your lady. Think about what she likes and what her tastes are, don't buy her a big ring if its not her style and don't start off your marriage with a big debt.
That said, if you are looking for an honest straight forward answer I'll tell you betwen $1000 and $2000 would be an excellent range. Of course you can shop around to get deals and you can definitely spend much mroe or less. But if you have no idea where to start, I'd start in this range.
As far as where to go, there are a million jewelry stores in the world. Start looking at the mall if you need help and ideas. I'd personally suggest to try more of a jeweler type store, one where you choose the diamonds and settings yourself. These are larger stand alone stores that are not in malls and have typically been in business for several decades. You'll have better choice, price and service there than at a mall store. I don't know what stores like this are in your area so ask some people you know for suggestions or look in the phone book under jeweler.
Just remember whatever you decide, make sure it feels right to you and if its from the heart your lady will love it.

I have seen this type of question so many times, I don't understand why you guys can't make that decision yourselves.
We don't know where you live so as far as 'where to get one',
I can only make a suggestion from here in Texas.
A place called the 'jewelry Exchange'.
You'll find the most beautiful 'diamond rings' for a fraction of what you'd pay in a jewelry store.
For instance, my husband just got me a 2 carat diamond ring
for our anniversary and paid just over $2000, that same ring in a jewelry store would cost you about $8000.
The Jewelry Exchange may even have a website.
And as far as how much you should spend? Only spend what you know you can afford.!!!

Most women want nice rings. You should know what she thinks about things like expensive rings before you propose!
She might prefer you spend your money on a home or a vacation, but if you have money to spend, I think you should. Two months salary is really a decent guideline.
Go to a jewelry store in your town (or even mall) and tell them you are just looking and learning. You find a place where you feel comfortable.

Don't go in to debt for the ring but I don't think a walmart ring is as romantic. I'm sure no matter what you get she'll love it but as a wedding planner the average male under 25 spends about $1,000-$1,500. Over is 1,500-2,500. But honestly the best thing to do is when you go ring shopping follow your gut, it also helps to bring a woman AND another male to help. You get both sides then hahaha. For inexpensive rings that are beauty go to Kay Jewelers. They also have a great financing program. Hope that helped.

I got an emerald cut Sapphire about 1.45 carets for about 750 and found an antique platinum band with the center stone missing for 1200 more I had the Sapphire set among the diamonds and that cost 200 to get it guaranteed. so that was about 2150 for engagement ring the platinum wedding bands were 4500 more and are custom made with the Hebrew inscription from the book of Ruth about whither thou goes there I will also go.

Ok, here is where smart shopping comes in. Rings are marked up ALOT. Go to Bidz.com and start shopping there. You can get her a ring that sells for a lot more in the stores for a lot less. You both win. She deserves a beautiful ring but you should not have to go into hock for it.

Generally, people try to spend 2 to 3 months salary on the diamond.
Be careful before you jump into that one though partner! A motorcycle also costs 2-3 months salary and you'll definately ride it more! Choose wisely!

My husband took me to every Jewelry store in town and I picked mine at the first store I could have had whatever I wanted but mine is a Sapphire that cost 325.00(Canadian). Its not the price but, the feeling and what it means. He also made me wait 3 months for it I thought he had changed his mind so it was a real surprise when I got it and I was even more surprised that it was the one I picked. (Who says men don't remember the small stuff)
We got my wedding band off eBay and it was $50.00 brand new and has been appraised at 600.00 the eBay store just started caring tungsten which is what I wanted (it matches his and he has loads of allergies but can wear this and it is never suppose to break or scuff)Good Luck!

from a womans point of view I dont think the size or the cost of the ring matters and for those girls that think its all about the ring shouldnt be getting married. Its the love and bond you two share not the material on her finger

Only a ring that you can comfortably afford. The diamond district in NY City is the best place to buy one.
