without we would dry up spiritually.
God is our Father and we are His children.
The best thing to do is keep in touch with your Father.

Because God told us to. (Matthew 6:5-15; Luke 18:1; 11Thessalonians 5:17; I Timothy 2:1-4; etc)
Because God answers prayer. (Psalm 65:2; Psalm 116:1,2; Luke 11:2-13; Mark 11:22-26; John 16:23-28; James 1:5-7; 5:13-15; I John 5:14,15)
Because it pleases God (Proverbs 15:8,29)
Someone once said, concerning the accomplishing of God's will in the earth:
"Without God, we cannot;
but without us, He will not."

He likes to hear from us.
Got any grandkids? They come to you asking for all sorts of stuff. Some of their requests are ok, some are ill conceived. Some requests - you're already working on a better idea.
Same thing.
Still you love to have 'em come to you and exchange big hugs and they share their day, their adventures, their concerns. You comfort them and assure them things will be fine.

First of all, we pray out of love for God, and a desire to communicate with Him. Also, He asks us in the Bible to pray, and that He will answer. If there was no point in praying, He would not ask us to. I do believe that prayer changes things. We pray for people that need help, that God will help them, and we pray when we ourselves need help.
God hears our prayers and responds to them:
1 Kings 9:3 And the LORD said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.
1 Peter 3:12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
2 Kings 20:5 Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD.

If you care to engage in an activity which is provably a complete waste of time, praying is as good as any.

Prayer is communicating with God. I pray to thank Him for our blessings and to ask him to watch over my friends and family.

Because there's no greater joy than talking to God. Remember that Jesus too prayed and as followers of Jesus, we do the same and it is so so fulfilling.

For the same reason a husband/wife talks to their spouse or their children. Communication is essential in any relationship.
