I just saw someone claim that babies die because of sin. I can't think of any sin that a newborn might've committed. Is it original sin that causes them to die? Or does the existence of sin in general kill them? If that's the case, how does that work? Exactly how does Joe's sin kill little baby Bobby?

NO. Babies are not born sick because of original sin. I refuse to believe in a God who would do that to his own creations. Babies are born sick because sometimes things go wrong in all arenas of life, and theirs hit early.

You have already answered the question. They died because of birth defects and diseases, not the original sin per se.

But if you want to look at it from the spiritual perspective, then it will somehow lead to the original sin. In fact, everything that is wrong in this world originated from the original sin. And the sad truth about this original sin was that it really really originated from an act of love from God. He loved us so much that he didn't want us to live robotic lives where we do exactly what He wants. And in an act of love, he bravely granted us, via Adam and Eve, freewill. Both of them were given the ability to chose ANYthing and God risked allowing them to choose to do the wrong thing. We can debate till the cows come home whether it was an erroneous judgement on God's part to grant this freewill. But no point doing that, as it is already done and we cannot undo it. We just need to look forward and live with what we have. Don't complain on the spilt milk. Just treasure the milk that is still in the cup.

So, the original sin resulted in the corruption of our genes and consequently resulted in defective genes which when unfortunately combined with other defective genes, coupled with other sinful acts like, smoking & drinking during pregnancy, aggression by the husband on the wife, the man/women's promiscous attitudes (leading to contracting diseases) etc, etc, the baby suffers.

Yes, this happens to the best of parents and hey, even those who live good Christian lives. Why? Only God knows but those parents whose feet are grounded on God's Word will have peace of mind that the baby is in heaven with a perfect body, and for them, they will somehow have the supernatural strength from God to carry on and not be bitter in life. That, I think is the best.

Original sin is the doctrine that all of humanity/history is tainted by the presence of sin. An extreme exammple would be the fact that each of us is conceived in a moment of lust. This sin - apart from our own contribution - is what infects and affects us all this side of eternity.
It is so pervasive that Jesus came not as a child of God - which he reminded the people, all are, but as the Son of Man. He is the start of a new creation free of this original sin. (One reason for the virgin birth by the way.)

some beginning defects are the consequences of mutations of genes. Others are extra of a mechanical mutation wherein an entire chromosome is broken in the time of its reproduction. regrettably, ninety 9.9999% of all mutations are the two undesirable, or in a close-by of our genetics that has 0 result. There are not any surprising jumps in evolution like X-adult adult males. so some distance as unique sin, it rather is an relaxing question, yet area of the unique sin mythology is that previously it, animals did no longer eat one yet another; lions and tigers ate salad, and so on.

Before Adam's sin all was PERFECT including DNA... then Adam sinned and mutations started....slowly. Now 1000s of generations later mutations upon mutations happen and some babies are affected by this and do not survive

Death, disease, destruction, war, pestilence ect... Is not God's plan for us...

Free will has spun us into this realm of mortality...

Its something we have to live with while we're on this earth..

What we do with our lives and if we take advantage of the provision God gave us in His Son...

That will determine if Joe will see baby Bobby again..
